I just noticed this today. It may be of interest to some, and certainly ought to draw some comments:

---begin quoted text--------

August 10, 2001 to November 30, 2001:

If you purchase a new 200 or 225* HP 3.0L Mercury OptiMax Outboard, you can receive an additional year of warranty coverage and a cash back rebate.

OFFER 1: Consumers may receive a cash rebate of $1000 and receive an additional year of limited factoryw arranty (for a total of three years) with the purchase of a new 1999, 2000, or 2001 model year 200 or 225 HP 3.0L OptiMax engine. All requests must be registered by November 30, 2001. Rebates may be sent directly to the consumer in the form of a Mercury Marineª check or deducted directly from the retail sales contract giving consumers a "Mercury Instant Rebate" at the time of purchase

OFFER 2: Consumers may receive a cash rebate of $500 and receive an additional year of limited factory warranty (for a total of three years) with the purchase of a new 2002 model year 200 or 225 HP 3.0L OptiMax engine.

All requests must be registered by November 30, 2001. Rebates may be sent directly to the consumer in the form of a Mercury Marine check or deducted from the retail sales contract giving consumers a "Mercury Instant Rebate" at the time of purchase.

That's a 3-year factory-backed warranty with cash back. It's a limited-time offer and just another reason to get more by powering with the leader. See your Mercury dealer for details or call 800-MERCURY.

*Consumer rebates and additional 3rd year warranty applies to 200 and 225 HP 3.0L OptiMax Models Only.

I mention this for a couple of reasons:

--I like Mercury in general and wanted to let other Merc fans know about this;

--the rendering of this message on their website is so fouled up that this text does not appear on my browser (a non-Microsoft browser on a non-PeeCee platform) so that I had to go to "view source" mode to even see it. Since others may be similarly affected by this poorly coded HTML, I thought I would do Mercury a favor and let people see their message without obscuring it with all their black backgrounds and graphics.

Ok, comments anyone? Would this make you more likely to buy an Optimax?

Think they would mount one on my Montauk:)

Interesting. Seems like they might have a lot of left overs.

Given Juris' experience, no way would I roll the dice and take a chance on a big Optimax. I think I'd only consider one if the warranty provided for "loaner" engines of equivalent horsepower during the extended time the Optimax is out of commission because warranty work is being performed. I think my short boating season here is worth more than a 1,000 bucks.

BS,

I think you have that wrong. The right question is: would they mount your Montauk to one? ;)

I've read the thread on Juris's experiences with Mercury. Specifically -- how Juris was unable to use his boat this past season. What good is a warranty extension, when Mercury (from what I've read) doesn't even honor the original warranty? I have a 1999 115 Merc on my Whaler, and hope I'm never treated the way Juris was.

I recieved a rebate from Mercury when I bought my Whaler with Mercury 2 stroke 90hp.

I purchased my boat/engine on January 13, 2001. I received my rebate check in the mail on March 22, 2001 for $225.

The amount was proportional to engine horsepower.
