The checks are coming in. So far we have collected $595.00 from 15 members. I would like to thank DrT, bigz, lhg and others for their support on this project. Last year more than $1500.00 was collected. I would like to appeal to the new members to do what they can so we can go over the top from last year. Please makes checks to: Continuous Wave C/O Jay Murray and send them to, ATR Distributing Co., P.O. Box 85, Cleves, Ohio 45002. Thanks, Jay

This midweek update is to say thanks for all your support! So far we have 18 members and a total of $675.00. It looks like most of the support is coming from the long term members. Please, new members support this effort for Jim. With out this site many of us would have very limited resources for our questions. Lets send a big THANK YOU to Jim for all his efforts. Thanks in advance. Jay

Jay, fine job so far.

I know, mentioned to you I wasn't going to post but hey, one thing I wanted to point out if I may!

That is folks should remember this isn't about "paying" Jim one red cent this is an appreciation award for all the hard work, long hours that he has spent. Combined with the realization by some members, that there is no such thing as a free lunch --- Jim has put out his own money to bring together this community of Whaler enthusiasts --- not a single commercial sponsor involved -- and your contribution to the award says "Hey Jim thank you for all you are doing and will be doing for us--- it is greatly appreciated"!

Jay, with that in mind let's see how many of the "newbies" feel the same as us "oldies" appreciating the work and effort JimH does to bring us this resource.

Amen, Tom.

And, I would like to add one thing.

It is difficult for someone who is not actively engaged in technology efforts to appreciate the amount of work that Jim has put in to this site to make it work as well as it does. You see--literally--what Jim would like you see: An efficient, clean interface for the exchange of text information. You do not see the time and effort that goes into making this work in a reasonably seamless manner.

On top of that, this site has evolved into a community of individuals with a common interest--but many, many varying viewpoints.

Jim deserves out thanks for this.

Shoebie is Vermont jargon. I have heard two explanations:

1.) Vermonters throw nothing away, hence lots of shoeboxes.

2.) When the cows stand in the pasture, they say, "Shoo Bee".

In NJ(lived at the beach)we called tourists Shoebies. They wore shoes on the beach, umbrellas, cameras, SOCKS!
blackdog posted 10-19-2001 09:57 AM ET (US)     Profile for blackdog  Send Email to blackdog
LOL! That's a goog one Tom.

Definition – Shoebie- (I will translate for those of you not from the Great State of New Jersey, Specially southern NJ.)

Someone who travels down the shore for the day and conspicuously carries a shoebox. The contents of the box usually include lunch or some other snacks to provide nourishment for the long arduous journey.

A shoebie is typically not from the coastal region they are visiting. A Shoebie looks to be out of place. Some ways to spot a Shoebie.

·Sandals with socks- Black or white, it doesn’t matter.

·Black Sneakers or any color High top sneakers

·Flower print shirt of some sort

·Tank Tops

The list goes on but nothing else comes to mind. Hope this helps!

I thought this was all from the Frank Sinatra song that went

Shoebie, dobie, doo
Newbie Newbie

Or maybe I was mistaken. Kelly

Thank You Newbies for answering the call, 3 more members this a.m. for a total of $735.00. I came into work this morning because my son wanted to play golf with his friends and not go fishing with the "old man". I guess I'll winterize the 13' sport today. Thanks again! Jay

So Jay how is the Award fund going? Anymore of the newer members come through?
JFM posted 10-24-2001 10:51 AM ET (US)     Profile for JFM  Send Email to JFM
Bigz and all. There hasen't been any more "newbie" and "oldbie" contributions since Saturday. So we still stand at 23 members and total $810.00. My most recent post on this was revised by my secretary(I can't add or count). I was pretty bummed out about my son's decision to play golf than go fishing Sat morning. I'm also tiered of begging! I can't belive we don't have more participation than this. How many hundreds of members are there by now , maybe thousands? Regards, Jay

Sorry to hear the news Jay both on the award and your son. Then again he could have turned to something other than "golf" if you get my drift! Well lots of folks still perceive the net and these forum sites as a "free" lunch used to call that type of a character a "sponge" or "mooch" take your pick, guess we still could but not socially correct ;) --- Tom

To everyone, thanks for your emails of encouragement. I have not given up. Let's take that hill, full steam ahead! Send those checks in and show your support for Jimh. Remember, just one answered question on this site is worth something, some times the answers save you lots of $$$. Ra, Ra, Ra, I still have the faith. Regards, Jay

Suggestion:

I bet you guys would get a better responce if you made it easier to send payment. I almost never use checks and mail anymore and do everything electronic. What about a paypal account?

bigz posted 10-25-2001 07:13 AM ET (US)     Profile for bigz
Jay, WaW has a good point, that is if you want to be troubled with a PayPal set up. We used PP last year afraid only about 3 folks took advantage of it. Food for thought. tom

Would appreciate any electronic payment means. US$cheques not obvious in the Canadian boonies. If you are going to a West Marine voucher could they take payments direct to a special account?

If any one on this web site doesn't have a checking account or can't get a US money order, certainly can't be bothered with this request. It is a simple request, to award jimh for the nice things he does for all of us with HIS website. I know the mail is being held up and we have left this request open until the end of Nov. I have faith that when most members think this over they will want their name included as a donor. I know that I would feel like an ass if my name wasn't included with as much as I use and enjoy this site. Jay
Bigshot posted 10-25-2001 10:54 AM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
easy noew Jay. Can't make people feel like an "ass" if they do not contibute. This is voluntary and just that. I know what you mean but you do not want to offend the masses, that is my job:)

JFM, If you are going to post who contributed, why don't you go ahead and post who you have received funds from as of right now. That way, if someone sent in a check but you did not receive it, there will be time to track it down or send another one.

No reason to get upset, JFM . It was just a suggestion on how to raise more $$$ for this site. Many people here seem to know about ebay and paypal is a popular electronic payment method that people use on Ebay.

I personaly have EFT capabilities and just issued you a tranfer. Even if your company can't accept them, it should automatically
revert back to a paper check.

JFM posted 10-25-2001 02:52 PM ET (US)     Profile for JFM  Send Email to JFM
WantaWhale, I'm not upset! Maybe just a little frustrated. My company does EFT, but you need my bank info. I don't want this to go through the company. The plan was a simple way for those that want to show their appriciation to jimh. I'll make one deposit at the end of Nov. and pay for the awards, not post names but include them with the awards and give a detail account of where all money was spent. I didn't mean for this to turn into the next telethon. Regards, Jay

I finally got "round tuit" today.

This site is great. I love reading the personal anecdotes...especially one's that help me rationalize buying that next boat--and remind all readers of the family fun togetherness boating can offer.
