While chasing fins this summer in Florida around Pine Island I often saw these 25-30 foot IO's going WOT. Most, if not all, had no graphics and were sort of plane-jane looking. No sponsors name or graphics in the least. ALL were by themselves and wore a helmet but nothing else out of the ordinary like protective suits or gloves. It didn't seem like a race because I saw them many days and were mostly by themselves spaced miles apart. Also with the high level of Manatee concern and protection there it didn't seem a likely racecourse. I saw maybe 20-30 or so different ones over a 3 week period going North or South through the Sound. Anyone know what they were doing?
I know this isn't a Whaler related post but I was on my Montauk!! BTW, Floridaís where itís at for me. Year-round boating! Thatís something a Yankee (Pittsburgh) like me is not used to. I do have pics and when I have time to write a little about my trip Iíll forward to Jimh.

Jimh. Would you please edit my last paragraph. It's a copy of the previous paragraph.
Thanks.

That is Mercury. They use Lake X and run offshore out there. Usually Yellow boats?

Actually, I think some were yellow. Some red and some black also. They weren't outboards, though. Mostly IO's as I recal. Mercruiser I guess. Thanks Bigshot.

Yes, it's Mercury. They run test rigs, outboard and I/O out of their Mercabo site. The site will soon be closing, and testing moved to other locations. Tree huggers and Manatee supporters kind of prompted the "get out of Dodge while the gettin's good decision.

For those who think being a "test driver" would be cool, consider the following: A test driver is assigned a boat/engine combo and told to put 500 hrs. on it. They work 40 hrs one week and 45 the next. And that's all they do...run those boats up and down the intra coastal 'till there's 500 hrs on it, and then get another rig. They do keep a log of course. But it's definitely a young man's game. And while we all love being in our boats, just think about pounding south for a couple hours, then north for a couple...day after day!

Incidentally, the boats are devoid of anything that would allow them to be identified by either the driver or the public...only the test engineers know.

Harpoon (thanks but no thanks) Harry
