Hey guys!

The boat I purchased in September is supposedly a 1974 Montauk. However, it seems to have characteristics from several models. The center console is painted wood, appears to be mahogany and plywood and matches the design seen in pictures of Nauset and Sakonnet in reference section. The windshield assembly has apparently been replaced with plexi mounted to the outside.

The pilot seat is also painted and has a solid mahogany seat with rotted out plywood sides (just removed). The seat is not reversible and looks just like the Nauset.

Was there some hybrid made in the transition year of 74?

Thanks in advance for any clues!

The boat you describe sounds like a Nauset that has had its original windshield removed and replaced with something else.

The "Montuak" model always implies a molded center console, as far as I know.

Sounds like a Nauset that didn't get respect from a previous owner, MontaukMax. The mahogany RPS was a Sakonnet and earliest Montauk feature, I think, and Nausets had the non-reversible seat. I have seen a number of mahogany consoles in which the classic windshield had been replaced by plexiglass.

Thanks for the input! I thought 73 was the last year for the Nauset, but the description seems to fit.

I have a 74 catalog, I will try and find it and look.

My 1976 catalog shows the Sakonnet as it's last year, although I have yet to hear of one. With the 1974 appearance of the Montauk, it quickly took over, and Whaler wanted out of the mahogany console manufacturing.
