Author Topic:   moisture meters - heavy hulls

I read a lot about heavy (wet) BW hulls. One item I never read about are those wonderful electronic moisture meters. I had an inspector use one on a 10-year-old Montauk I had planned to purchase. Turns out, there was moisture at the motor mounts in the transom. If the moisture meter is really that good, then why can't it be used to detect moisture anywhere in the hull? OR was the inspector really a snake oil salesman in disguise.

From what I understand about moisture meters, they have to be used on bare hulls. That means that you're out of luck if your hull has bottom paint -- or you have to remove the bottom paint before using the meter. If this is incorrect, someone please advise. Thanks, LKS

The only one in the price range and even that is questionable unless your a wood worker or a small kiln operator is the Wagner non-destructive about $275 which can give you decent assessment of the moisture present.

The others which are pro level instruments start in the area of $500 and go up these are highly accurate and will as the Wagner detect moisture up to about 3/4 of an inch deep into the hull even through dry "bottom" paint.

Caution, you can detect moisture in numerous areas on a Whaler or any sandwich cored boat for that matter, the key is how much is to much. For instance, not unusual to find some in the transom plywood, however depending on the readings and of course it's not apparently saturated, these section can be repaired so that what is causing the moisture infiltration can be sealed and generally you'll end up with a fine boat.
