I've been in both. As for quality, they're equal. I'd give Pursuit the edge in style and ride, while I think the Whaler has a more utilitarian feel and maybe a bit more solid feeling, along with a slightly quieter ride, probably due to the foam. Check out the windshield on the Pursuit. That will give you an idea of how well built they are. Tough to call, in my opinion.

In your case I am recommending the Pursuit.

I want to thank you all for your recomendations on my behalf. Would you consider including your reasoning. I for one appreciate the body of knowledge amassed on this board and the kind generosity of its memebers in sharing it with those such as myself who are new to boating. Without such cooperation and thoughtfulness I would be adrift. Thank you all for being yourself. Ron

Wow, I can't believe that so many people recomended the Pursuit over the Whaler on a Whaler Forum!

Anyway I recomend the Whaler 23' Conquest! A friend of mine has a 23' Conquest and it is the solidest boat on the water!
Lets take a look at features vs features

1) Whaler has a ladder that you can access from the water. Try grabing the one on the Pursuit off of the back wall when u are in the water.

2) Stern Seat doesn't fold away in the Pursuit. What fisherman loves the European Transom, none that I know. At least you can get further back in the Whaler b/c the seat is folded away.

3)Where are the fish boxes in the Pursuit. Whaler just slide your fish in the transom door in into the box!

4)Where are the Toe Grab Rails in the Pursuit. Hooking fish or leaing over the gunwall for a fish or skier is alot safer with the Stainless Steel toe rail!

That is just a start of why the Whaler is better.

We still havent' gone into the construction of a Whaler, its unsinkablity, and the quaility of the components going into the boat. Which surpasses the Pursuit.

DSCEW is right in his statement
"a bit more solid feeling, along with a slightly quieter ride, probably due to the foam"

It is due to the foam, construction. Both the Solid ride and the quietness!

I have been on many boats in my life, and yes I have been a Whaler owner for 16 Years, but the facts are still facts! Whaler is a better boat!

Happy Boating!

Oh! I forgot. I especially want to thank Jimh for his patience and help with my spelling and grammer. I for one plan a generous contribution to his award fund and I would encourage others to do the same. Thanks for the help. ron

Ron, I would also say the Pursuit is a fine boat more than equal to your outlined needs.

On that note, have you looked at the Hydra Sport they are first class craft very suited for the Chesapeake. Just an alternative.

Don't get me wrong I have a deep fondness for Whalers, however one has to be realistic about their individual needs and not be caught up with the illusion that Whalers old or new are the "best" for all purposes, after reading this forum. It just isn't.

Best of luck, and happy to hear your going to make a contribution to JimH's 2001 award for providing us with this educational and informative forum --- Tom

What are your needs for a boat? Everyone says that the Pursuit fits your needs better but what are they? A boat that can handle the Chesapeake and that you can Fish and take Weekend Trips. Why does a 23' Conquest not fit that need? Was there a conversation about other needs in Ron's case that I missed?
Thanks
Aaron
