My recently purchased Newport has a gas tank under the console. At the Marina today it seemed difficult to know when it was full (no gauge obvious) and sloppy filling to the top of the console. It says "Glas Tank" on it and is held off the deck by a small chain. I saw the thread on Montauk gas tanks recently. Is that the thing to do?

I'm missing something here, Curtis. Is there a permanent tank installed under your console with a filler in the console itself? Also, I don't understand what your question is.

Please forgive an old salt and try again.

Yes, there is a permanent tank under the console, held up by an adjustable ahain, with the filler neck coming up to the top of the console. Is this how other Newports are?

Curtis, Newports came with two seating arrangements: cooler seat (fuel tanks under console); flip-back helm seat (tank under seat a-la Montauk). If you have the flip-back seat (also referred to as the "reversable pilot seat - RPS") I would recommend that you rearrange to facilitate tank under seat. Balance/trim of the boat will be better and the space under console will now be handy for stowage and good toe space when standing! If you have the cooler seat you may want a new under console tank with sight gage or remote gage and get rid of that deck filler on console. Sounds like a bad idea to me... but then above is only one opinion... beam me up.... Clark... Spruce Creek Navy
PS> if you move tank under seat you must drill through deck to cable trough in order to fit fuel line through... no big deal... I have had success with a hole saw (min. 1" dia). The cable trough is formed by the inlayment of an aluminum tube (about 3" dia) so drill slowly and carefully as cutter tends to bind up when it encounters the aluminum tube! Find or make a smoothe fairlead to prevent chaffing of fuel line..etc..etc..etc

Thanks-Now I'll go have a smoothie and try to figure out what a smoothie fairlead is- Seriously-thanks. I do have a RPS, so that's the way to go. curtis
