Does anybody have any experience with either or both of the lowrance model X-85 or X15MT fish finders? I am wondering if it is worth the extra $$$$ for the X15 for Lake Michigan salmon fishing especially if gps is not an issue?? Also is it a big advantage to go with the 50kz transducer over the 200kz?

Ray, I looked at both and bought the X-85. While the display resolution of the X-85 is not as great as the X15MT, it is very, very good at locating bait fish, your prey, thermoclines and anything else that might be down there.
If fact I thought the display on the X15MT was too detailed and the green, rather than black, detail made it more difficult to see.
Unless you routinely fish in water over 600' the 192kHz is the way to go.

I have gone from Furuno to Zercom to the X15mt (in 2 years) and the Lowrance unit is the best for me. The X15 takes time to learn but does a great job. You do not need the 50/200 dual 'ducer - the 200 is fine. If gps/mapping is not important save the $ and get the X 85. The X 65/75/85 series is the most popular in my area of the Chesapeake Bay ( with Garmin close behind).

LOWRANCE is a favorite of mine. They were the originators of the "fish finder" SONAR. I think the company went into the doldrums for a while recently. Their product line seemed to stagnate and they were in the process of being bought by COBRA Electronics.
The COBRA deal was called off, which I think was a good thing because the COBRA name was always associated with cheap CB radios and not quality electronics.
Maybe that got the fire going again at LOWRANCE. Their product line is getting a bit stale and it needs some renewal. They certainly have it at the high end with that X-15-MT model.

Hey Friends, Merry Christmas
I just went out and bought me an X-85 as it was the last day at Gander Mtn store for their sale at $297 which I thought was a very good price.. I will add the temp and speed for $70. I have been playing with it in front of the Christmas tree hooked to my marine battery and on similator. Tons of options. Glad you talked me into it.. Now to wait all winter.........
