I really enjoyed the discussion on Lowrance and other fish finders from about a week ago-and also the earlier thread...Now- any suggestions on where to buy the unit for best price etc??? Should I wait for the big boat shows??? I was blown over by the fellow who got the Lowrance X85 at $300- At least a hundred off normal price. I thought that Gander mountain had gone out of business long ago...any other suggestions on best unit to purchase under $500.
I am replacing an old Apelco Amber CRT unit on my 78 20' Outrage. All salt water fishing in water under 200'-mostly under 100'. Looking for quality and durability...havn't seen many comments on Garmin units ie..their 240 unit??? All suggestions will be appreciated..

Dave, look at the post for Overtons. If you can get 20% off on electronics, I think you can't go wrong. Regards, Jay P.S. I always had good service from Lowrance.

Love my GPSMAP 230 unit. Had it for the last two years since I got my 2000 Montauk.

Had a transponder go bad. Garmin replaced it and serviced the unit with no questions and no problems. They gave me a new transponder.

The only real weakness, as far as I am concerned, is the mounting bracket. I have broken several from taking hard shots from the chop. They say that it is designed for 7 g's. Probably only in a vertical direction. The sideway shots cause it to bend too far and to pull the mounting nuts out of the plastic mount.

This spring, I will make a starboard mount which will be much stronger than the factory unit.

I am the guy who bought the X-85 for $297 from Gander Mtn. They still had a boat load of them on Christmas eve and may extend the sale. I can check for you... They did drop their mail order branch some time ago but they still do local retail. We have two stores here in Grand Rapids, MI. Let me know.

I bought the x85 on 12-31-01 for my 22' Revenge. I got it from the Gander Mountain in Grand Rapids, MI. It came with the speed/temp transducer. $317 taxed in. They had more. Thanks for all the info. Let me know if I can help.

That's an unreal price. Are you sure they are not factory reconditioned? Someone must have entered the wrong price in the computer. I say buy now before they realize their mistake.

The phone number to gander mountain is (616)975-1000. The unit I purchased is new and not reconditioned and the transducer is included. The price on the display unit was $400. I asked the salesperson if it was on sale, he scanned it and the price registered at $299.
Hope this helps,
