Will be in Tampa on business this Thursday and have decided to make a long weekend out of it to get away from ole man winter for a few days. I'd be interested to hear suggestions for boating/fishing, whaler rentals, etc. in the Tampa area. Thanks.

don't know of any whaler rentals but try cannons marine in Long Boat key(area code 941). They were a whaler/grady dealer and rent Grady's. Maybe they rent whaler's or know who does. have to see Eggmont key. due West of Skyway bridge. On south side is green water and ruins from a Spanish/American war fort that you can snorkel. Give me a shout if you are gonna be out. I will be breaking in my Montauk this weekend.

I would bet cannon's still has whalers
for rent.Take interstate 275 through
St.pete and that will lead you over
the Skyway bridge. If you look to the west
as you go over the skyway you,ll see
Egmont key.I think they have guided
tours of Egmont key. There is also a
lighthouse on the island.

Continue south and 275 will merge into
75 south.
Cannons marina

Longboat key,fl.

They might still have some left over
T-shirts with a 17ft Whaler on the back.
Have fun!

Hey Tbirdsey,
Cannons has a website.
Yes they do rent Whalers.
www.cannons.com

They say you can reserve them by phone.
They also rent cottages.

just got the whaler back and I will be at "Beercan island" this weekend. It is about a mile from Cannons right near the longboat pass inlet.

There is also a boat show going on this
weekend in St.Petersburg at the bayfront center. They will have lots of boats in
the water.Maybe there will be one of the
new 27 Outrages there.
We have a few days between jobs and
tommorow is one of them. We are going
out and trying to catch a few grouper.

Hey bigshot,
Is that the last bridge before you get to
Cannon's marina? On the left or right as
you are going south?

Look for an old Newport with a white bimini. That'd be the "Dr.Feelgood" from Buckhead,GA. Hope to see you.

It is the last bridge going south before cannons...right across from Jewfish Key, where Long Boat meets Anna Maria.

Curtis....look where, boat show, Beer can, or ?

I'm a bit suprised to see that Cannon's still rents whalers, since they no longer are a whaler dealer. They sold them since 1960, but I think that they dropped out a couple years ago over the problems with having to rig mercurys. They don't sell Mercurys, and were rigging all their boats with Yamahas. Now they're a scout dealer, and the dealership that took over the whaler account claims to be the world's largest whaler dealer. Whether that means that they sell whalers while being the worlds largest sea ray dealer, I don't know.

Thanks to all for the tips. Cannon no longer rents Whalers and could not find anyone that did. Ended up with an older 21 Cape Craft (yuck)with a 150 Yamaha and a great story about a Whaler couple we ran into on Friday afternoon (small world!!). Will be sending details and photos to Jim - hopefully for cetacea. Got to the boat show on Saturday, but its getting hard to distinguish the Whalers from the rest of the crowd. Heard the new 27 Outrage will be at the Miami show. Closest thing to a classic whaler was the 30'Osprey in the water - a real no nonsense, durable, fishing or cruising boat that can even be powered with twin outboards. I'd like to get a ride in one someday.

Bigshot-I'm changing my name to "Chicken****"- I had two dead batteries Sunday am, plus it was foggy early,so I stayed close to the hotel, but next time I will see you there. PS- Sun am -while I was at the dock at the Doublebucks- oops Doubletree- a cabbie crashed into an Excursion and a robber jumped out and escaped on foot. Welcome to the Tango Topless area.

Bigshot: I feel guilty for having you out there alone. Despite the great weather, I haven't had the boat out in weeks. We've been really tied up with some other stuff.
