How many boats have you owned?

Please give the year and price (if you remember or care to divulge).

I will start. This is a piece of cake for me. I know that for some forum members this will require more than fingers and toes.

1980 - Used Laser Sailboat - $900 (I think)

2001 - 2001 Montauk with Mercury 2 Stroke 90(and trailer)- $21,824.75 (take home price)

Two Boats

1984 Montauk w/ 1984 70hp Johnson - 7,200.00

1987 18' Outrage w/1987 150 Yamaha- 10,500.00

1985 22' Outrage w/ 1995 225hp Merc - 16,500.00

All were used boats and in very good condition

Whitecap... Looks like you have a classic case of "two-foot-i-tus". I think you now need that classic Outrage 25.

Two boats so far:

1984 Sport 13 '84 40 Merc w/trailer-paid $4,300 new, sold last year for $6,500. Better return than my stocks!

1995 Montauk '95 90 Merc w/trailer-purchased last year for $11,500.

I won't mention the Personal Water Crafts for fear of stereotyping by the salty dogs on this forum.

What in the hell does this posthave to do with the forum topic Classic Whaler: General??? ---

In answer to my own question --- not a dam thing, other than to fill up space -- or offer a diversion to the peanut gallery --

Don't start whining as some usually do. I ain't no moderator or affliated with Hebert. This is my opinion and it ain't going to change.

This forum started with a direction which it should darn well keep on track ---

These superficial and nonsensical post should be directed more to other general forums on boats found all over the net.

-- 1974? BW Squall, I forget the price but it was around $500
-- 1979? Aqua-Cat, bought used for $800, wore it out by 1985
-- 1941 Hunter cruiser 30', bought used in 1980? for $6K, sold it in 1990 or so
-- 1986 BW Revenge 20', bought used in 1999 for $10K
-- Built 2 boats in 2000: 8' pram and 14' canoe (stitch and glue)
-- 2000 West Wight Potter 19, bought used last year for $9K

I still own all of them except the Hunter and the Aqua-Cat. You can't have too many boats.

Hey Arch -- knew I'd pull up a whining -- you surprised me I must say.

Now since you I can see are able to copy headings--- which is more than some of the folks can -- did you by chance read the content?

Each one was either directed to news items which might or did effect members of this forum. Others were more of a seasonal nature reflecting weather conditions etc., --

Anyway how is your 42 yawl handling the Monongahela these days ---- Z

Are you forgetting why you bought a boat in the first place?

Besides, what a tremendous resource for someone trying to price a used Boston Whaler.

I’ll await the moderator to delete these.

In the meantime as a matter of fact I have read some of them. Especially the ‘Public Responds to the Manatee Protection’. Very informative. But I forgot what it had to do with whalers. Oh…nothing.

And while my wining surprised you your diatribe from a crotchety old man didn’t. I just tire from time to time of similar comments from forum owner wannabees.

“Anyway how is your 42 yawl handling the Monongahela these days ---- Z”
and the ever popular “Now since you I can see are able to copy headings--- which is more than some of the folks can –“

Nice comments, Z.

I frankly wasn't trying to put GAwhale in a bad light either. The point was that this and similar post which usually garner multiple replies simply fill up space with no redeeming content or apparent purpose was the point I was trying to make.

I am just smiling here reminicing about 7 months ago when I joined this wonderful haven. Arch was there when I mistakenly said this forum needs to lighten up and have more fun? Damn near got lynched. How about when Tsurbiki and I went at it because I said "Jap crap" or something. It seems like the ones you butt heads against the hardest wind up being your best pen-pal. I was a pompous jerk(still am) but we all have to get along which means biting a tongue or making an apology every now and then.

I see you guys/girls listened. Forum is much more fun and these little topics seem to bring people closer and show a bit about each other. Granted it has nothing to do with Whalers but in a way it does because we all own them and have owned other boats as well so we can actually claim they are better, etc. Maybe we should have a "Docktalk" forum where we discuss non-whaler related topics.

Keep up the good work everyone and smile at your neighbor but.....don't let his dog piss on your lawn:)

BS. I also wish there was a way to say things (on another part of this forum) also that would also keep intact the quality-of-content reputation I believe we have. Without a doubt that in not common with many forums.

Hey, those ofus living in colder climes need a diversion, eh?
First boat, 1989: 25' Carver ( 1973 wooden lapstrake) Restored it , and then it sank in the "Perfect Storm" in 91. Total loss...
after that, vowed never to own a boat that wouldn't fit on the roof of my truck.
1992: Old Town Discovery 164
1993: Old Town Sport w/4hp Mariner
2000: Got over the trauma, bought a 95 Montauk w/ 96 70hp Yamaha.
Next Boat: Mid to late eighties 22' Outrage or Revenge.

When I was about eight, I built a 'boat' out of cedar siding and wood filler to seal the cracks. All my friends came down and helped. Of course, the 'boat' would not float.

Then I found a 4x8 sheet of 3/4" plywood, attached some pieces of railroad ties with about a million 20 penny nails. It floated, but only with two truck tubes under it. Used the raft a bunch and Grandmothers house.

When I was perhaps 13, I raced an OK Dinghy (like an Olympic Finn, only smaller, now outmoded by Lasers) . Mine was number US 1, and had to be the heaviest OK dinghy in existance. I weighed about 100lbs, and the OK had about the same number of square feet of sail. Lost a lot of races. Actually, lost all the races I was in. Dead last. Also got good at dumping it over.

A few years later, for Christmas I recieved a Danish built varnished mahagany OK Dinghy, that had finished 3rd in the worlds the year before (1970?). Probably the best gift I ever hope to get. Stopped comming in last, but still beaten in many races by future Olypmpic gold metal sailor Carl Buchan. I finished 5th in the nationals in '74. Carl won, I think. Received the Capsize Award for "repeated effort" Perpetual trophy, last awarded in, umm, 1974.

Took up white water kayaking. Coincidence? I thought so at the time. Built a Letmann Mk I, and then a 'Streaker' (NW hack of a Prion mould, the year would be about 1974, hence the name. Remember streaking? Anyway, volume and weight of slalom racing kayaks dropped, so I bought a custom kevlar Eddyline WSL-10 kayak "Dancing Lady" that weighted about 18# all up. Great boat, used it till it began to disintigrate several years later, then tried to get someone to steal it by leaving it outside for a couple of years in the middle of Seattle. No go.

Lots of other kayaks, including a Whalecraft foldable from the 50's, "Seaweed" (green and gold sea kayak), and my latest, a Pygmy Coho, not yet named. Finally have a boat as pretty as that Danish mahagony OK in the 70's.

Oh yeah, and a 1988 Montauk. My first power boat.

Ok, gueass it is finally time to weigh in after reading posts and studying this forum for about a year.
Boat list:
1. 2 1/2 early 50's Evinrude, used it on Roger's dad's steel rowboat to troll at Harrison Lake. Run motor or fish, couldn't do both, One person had to bail.
2. Mid 60's Bayliner 14' w/65 Merc. Gave it to the partner as part of the buyout in'87.
3. 65 Fiberform with 50 Evinrude and 5 hs. Evinrude kicker. Purch. '87 $900 sold '90 $1800.
4. 12' '65 Crestliner (Autumn). Purch. '90 $200, sold '92 $500.
5. '79 21' Glassply Cutty (Summer). Purch. '90 $3500, Sold '96 $6500, Kept a mid eighty 15 hs Evinrude on the deal.
6. "58? 14' Crestliner (Autumn II). Purch. '91 $300, sold '98 $600.
7. '65 Chris Craft (Summer Dawn) '32 Sea Skiff, Purch '95 $10,500, Bottom in '97, Double repower done myself (350's)'2000, currently 100 hours and the house is melting down, too busy to keep up; but mechanical and I run it in all weather on the Columbia and Snake Rivers to camp, fish (steelhead and sturgeon) and generally spend water time with the things most important in my life (wife, kids, grandkids,animals, friends, and employees).
8. Started 3 kayaks '98, finished one (Princess) in '98. Others are on the mezanine at the shop. Will finish one of them with the 12 yo grandson this year and save the other for a different gkid.
9. '66 14' Crestliner (Autumn, seems to be a trend here), Purch. '98 $400, trades 15 hs for 30 hs Tohatsu (scary on tiller with kids skiing) Sold '01 $800, kept the Tohatsu
10. 2001 13' Sportcat (unchristened) was supposed to be my next fishing boat. Bought bare, did center console, controls, had ready to do elect. when fell into the reason for this post. By the way, still for sale, finished or unfinished.
11. '74 Katama with '85 merc and 4 hs Merc and full canvas package (all rotten but good Mills patterns) Purch '01 $3500 from original owner '83 yr old. Currently being recanvassed as I can afford and refinished and updated electronic package. Looking forward to Spring Bottom fishing on Wa coast. This is also Autumn and will remain mine until it grows into the next size up the food chain and may remain mine even then depending upon the size of the next big boat.

Boats (not including parent's boats (there's a bunch of them too):

1. 8' catboat (had flocked interior-- really nasty and just terrible to sail);
2. 8' Sydney Sabot (great little sailboat and unsinkable -- two hulls with foam in between, familiar?);
3. 7' Sears dinghy with 6 h.p. (junk, but it would fly);
4. 13' Whaler with 9.9 hp Johnson (perfection at 11 years old);
5. 12' SeaSnark (we busted it trying to surf it -- my dad was pretty mad);
6. 15' Sea Spray (catamaran -- you could run this one through the surf);
7. 16' Protoype racing cat (monster fast - and prone to dismasting, bending booms, etc.)(also a part owner of a Hobiecat -- pitchpoled a lot);
8. 14' Dory (inferior Whaler knock-off) 40 Johnson;
9. Sea kayak;
10. 16' (or so) Fireball (scow-type racer and scary);
11. 21' Mako, 200 Suzuki (seriously fast)
12. 28' Bertram, 2x260 inboards (man, I loved that boat and the ride -- you could make it dance too);
13. 33' Bertram, 2x350 Crusaders (454's -- and thirsty as heck, but it would squash short chop);
14. 21' Proline, 135 Mariner (while posted in the U.K. -- gas at $4.50/gal ugh);
15. 26' BW Outrage, 2x 225 Optimesses.
16. 8' US Sabot (for my boys to learn to sail in: first learn to sail, then get a powerboat).

I think that this is the lot, but I may have forgotten a few. As a kid, my parents went through a string of boats and we even lived on boats for varying periods of time (renting out the house).

July 1980 - 1980 Whaler Harpoon 15 foot, sold it in 1984 (moved and didn't have room for two boats)

August 2000 - 1995 17 Dauntless with 115 Evinrude. A nice stepup in comfort from the 15 Sport. But you can't beat that 15 Sport for just plain fun.

There have been two possessions that I've owned that are my favorites,a 911s Porsche targa and my 17' whaler.. it was refreshing to me to find I didn't need or want bigger.. better.. faster.. newer..

In the early '60's, a 1960 Owens, 25 footer. Partnership deal. Lousy partnership, lousy boat.
Then a 16' outboard, 40 horse Merc that was factory coral color.
About '72, a 19' Classic with a 165 Mercruiser. Classic sold out to Starfire. Same hull constuction.
Molded plywood rowboat in the late '70's.
A fixer-upper that I didn't fix. 'Gave it to Good Will.
Wood lapstrake 21', 1970 Carver with a OMC out drive, from 1977 until last year. With a commercial troll license, my wife and I were "kelpers", and we fished the western region of the Stait of Juan de Fuca and down the coast a ways. If we made enough to cover the gas each day we thought we'd done pretty good. But it was great fun.
25' '77 Carver Santa Cruz flybridge in '97. Still have it. 'Needs work. I want to get rid of it. Whaler in 2000. 18.5, 1981 Outrage with a 150 Black Max, and a Yamaha 8hp, 4 stroke, kicker. I still have it.
Another Whaler last year. 1981, 22' Revenge with the original 235 Johnson, and a 25hp Johnson kicker. I'm now in the process of sprucing it up.

I've either forgotten the prices, or I'm trying to forget them.

For those who say BW is too expensive!
Hey, has anyone noticed that when the price was posted for many of the older classics
the money paid for these was about the same for a new car at the time, going up in price with model. Taking this into consideration it should be noted that the new whalers also seem to be in this pricing structure.
A decent mid-sized car today is from the High teens to mid- twentys for a decent make, for a premium make car it is from the low twentys on up. What kind of car make would BW be equilivant to? Kia? Chevy? Ford? Volvo? Cadillic? BMW?

Any takers? (don't get to serious!) Bear

Well back to the game four boats:

in 1977 a 1973 16 Hobbie, $1600

in 1997 a 1990 Clebrity 210 WA, &16,000

in 2000 a 1997 Four Winns Fling, UGH $3000

in 2000 a 2001 Boston Whaler Dauntless 16, $24,000

in 1973 a brand new Dautsun pickup with mags an oversized BF Goodrich TAs and bed cover off the show room floor for $2,400.

in 1994 the first car I ever ordered from the factory and pick up at the dock - 1995 Volvo 850 GLT Wagon (first cars with side impact air bags) with all options for $30,000 (I was able to use a military discount, this was before serving your country was popular otherwise it would have been closer to $35,000).

Looks like Boston Whaler may be like Volvo, which since my purchase has been bought by Ford.............

Though I grew up on boats (sail and power), including my great uncle's 1972 21 outrage (which he still uses, now in his mid-80's), I bought my first boat 3 years ago when I was a senior in college:

1980 Montauk 1984 90 hp Evinrude $4500

Someday I might go for a 27 or 30 Catalina, or upgrade to a mid/late 1980's 22-25 Outrage. I'm also thinking now about a Zuma (small sailboat made by Vanguard)

Anyway, this post got me thinking. I know I've seen a section with polls of various subjects and their results. I can't find it, and I'm curious to see what the demographics of this forum are. Anyone have the link?

I have personally owned only 2 boats:

1) 1988 15' Hobie Power Skiff - $2000 for boat, motor (60HP mariner) and trailer. Fun little boat. The motor let go after a couple years of use and I replaced it with a 50HP Honda. Then I broke a stringer in rough water a couple miles off shore and barely made it home. Insurance gave me $2000 and told me to keep the hull (Yahoo!!).

2) 1996 Whaler Montauk 17' - Purchased the bare hull for $6000 +tax. Moved my motor, trailer, seat, console and livewell from my broken Hobie over to the whaler and instant new boat! :) Wow what an improvement!

The Laser sailboat should be rated somewhere up there with the Boston Whaler. My daughter is only five and even though I would like to teach her to pilot the Whaler, I also want to teach her how to sail. Gonna have to get a day sailer someday.

How do all of you remember prices and exact order? I'm impressed.

this thread has been usefull. After seeing what others have owned, my wife more clearly understands I'm not the only one with this malady.
My list (not in exact order), prices included when I can remember:

- 12' aluminum jon w/5hp Johnson - '50s vintage.
- 14' '57 Shell Lake w/40hp Johnson - mid '60s (sunken hull salvaged from Mississippi, my first rehab).
- 9' BW Squall - sail kit stolen - bought at garage sale for $125. 6hp Evinrude fisherman added.
- 14' Lund alum. fishing boat w/20hp Merc.
- 15' Sea Sprite runabout w/early '80s 40hp Evinrunde.
- '85 17' Chaparral open bow w/4.3L Mercruiser.
- 21' '89 Donzi w/350 Mercruiser Mag. $13,500.
- 23' '92 Wellcraft Coastal w/'96 225hp Suzuki on 2' transom braket. Paid $14,500.
- '69 13' BW Standard & trailer - $1000. Powered it w/'88 25hp Merc tiller.
- 17' Old Town square back canoe w/2.2hp Merc.
- 9' Old Town kayak.*
- 16' Alumacraft canoe.
- 11' pontoon paddle boat.
- 10' Zodiac 310 Cadet ($600) w/'97 15hp Merc ($1,500 but the seller made me take an early 70's 14' Shakespeare Wondercraft w/trailer to sell the motor at that price).
- '98 11' Quicksiver infaltable w/15hp Merc.*
- '89 25' Regal LF w/350 Mercruiser. Paid $15,000 in 1997 when boat had 212 hours on it. Outfitting on the boat (3 sets canvas, full electronics, hailer, floscan, twin Fortress anchors, 7,000# Shorland'r tandem w/elec. winch, 3 props, remote spot, Bennett tabs, twin wipers, etc., etc., etc.) was amazing. Update....just got my 13th Whaler and I think it puts me at over 30 boats. Nice 1984 Newport with a 1995 88hp Johnson. Might make a Newtauk out of either it or my 89 Montauk...decisions....decisions. Still a far cry from Clark's 49 Whalers though but I am still young:)

85 Robalo 18'
92 Robalo 1820
01 Carolina Skiff semi-v 23'
63 Boston Whaler 13' sport
two Old Town 169 Discovery canoes

The 1963 13' Sport I acquired this summer as a restoration project for $2700 (It had a 2000 barely used Johnson 25hp motor and excellent trailer.) This is my first Whaler and I am having fun learning from all of you on how to restore it. I miss my old Robalo, but am glad the 92 burned up in a lot fire! I presently use the C.Skiff for all use on the water - what a great, simple, tuff boat. I am expecting the 63 Whaler to be a miniature form of my big C.Skiff.

Geez Louise, I think we should give Sal some of that bailout money - he certainly gets it right into the economy. Your list reads like a one-man stimulus package all on its own. You are either a very finicky, yet highly motivated buyer, or you met one heck of a salesman... Jersey Shores salesman of the decade it reads like. Ha. ;-}

Rich isn't Biggie, cgodfrey. Nick is, or I've been even more flummoxed and confused than I readily acknowledge all these years ;-)

I currently own a 1987 Sport 15 center console, 1/3 interest in a 1973 one-of-a-kind banana Revenge-type 21, maybe a 1/3 interest in a Guardian 22 Divemaster, and a Frers/Hinterhoeller 31 ft sloop. How many in the past? Six or seven, I guess, mostly sailboats, not counting dinghys, inflatables, and little rubber duckies for my bathtub.

It is a true fact that I do fell humbled by the true content of these posts...
It is literary like a door that has been opened;
And that a breath of fresh air has come within..
And sort of like;
Some of us have gone out and didn't come back to shore.
Or at least have gone to some far and foreign shores;
Or have not been heard of again..
I can still read of some Capital commitments;
Then stated and still to be heard here and now.
I have to state that;

My first boats;

Hand crafted wooden "Barques"
Hand made of Pine planked hand made cherished wood;
Of a span of about fourteen feet;
And in a glazed and three scores repainted in this familiar but ever loved "Grass Green" in Marine enamel color..
Left to me by inheritance in a score of twelve..
Price- If to be told;
-1974 Springbook Ten footer aluminum tender with 7.5 Merc power.
A dandy of an assuming little craft that caught more fish then anybody else on any given day;
By tested and in recorded factual events..

And Importantly;
Was found to have ridden properly stern wise from the wake of our multitasked BC ferry coming to port at our Departure Bay tidal areas.

Bigshot posted 01-30-2002 02:29 PM ET (US) Profile for Bigshot Send Email to Bigshot I am just smiling here reminicing about 7 months ago when I joined this wonderful haven.

Bless your little heart;
Where ever that may be.

"Boston Whalers are the only boats that I will own!"

Boston Whaler #1 (17’ Montauk)
I fabricated my first Cuddy Cabin on this $400 bare hull. ?action=view¤t=MontaukCuddyCabin.jpg

Boston Whaler #2 (22’ Outrage)
This was a San Diego Navy boat that was used, abused, and beyond repair.

Boston Whaler #3 (17’ Montauk)
I Refurbished this boat and found it a new home.

Boston Whaler #4 (17’ Montauk)
I modified my garage to accommodate this Whaler. ?action=view¤t=IMG122.jpg

Boston Whaler #5 (17’ Montauk)
I Purchased this from a friend of a friend.
When I attempted to register the boat I discovered that it had been reported stolen. It was returned to it’s rightful owner and I learned a valuable lesson,
“Never purchase a boat without a pink slip”!

Boston Whaler #6 (22’ Guardian)
This had been a patrol boat on Lake Havasu.
I built my first pilot house on this Whaler that I named “Nantucket Sleighride” ?action=view¤t=SideView.jpg

Boston Whaler #7 (15’ Sport)
I restored this boat and we named it “Kuuipo” (Hawaiian for sweetheart).

Boston Whaler #8 (17’ Guardian)
This had previously been a Department of Fish & Game boat in Maryland.
I converted this to an ocean sport fishing boat and named it “Wave Hopper” ?action=view¤t=Airborne.jpg

Boston Whaler #9 (15’ Sport)
Another boat that I refurbished and found a new home for.
I feel like an adoption agency for misplaced Boston Whalers.

Boston Whaler #10 (22’ Sentry)
This was a Parks Department patrol boat on Lake Mead.
I would like to have held on to this amazing Boston Whaler.
Unfortunately the gas prices at the time had reached $4.00/gallon.
The gas guzzling appetite of the 225 Johnson outboard motor was like driving a Sherman tank to work each day. She had to go! ?action=view¤t=22BostonWhalerSentry.jpg

Boston Whaler #11 (15’ Sport)
I completed this restoration only to get emotionally attached to my current project, Boston Whaler #12. ?action=view¤t=IMG_0028.jpg

Boston Whaler #12 (17’ Utility)
This boat was specifically built for the Miami Boat Show.
It came out of the mold with a "Fire Engine Red" gelcoat hull.
It was purchased by the Arizona Fire Department and painted yellow.
I have stripped off the yellow paint, and have installed a 90 hp Honda.
With luck I will have her fully restored and back in the water very soon. ?action=view¤t=FireDepartment17Whaler.jpg

#12 reminds me of my local fire dept. We had a like new suburban purchased for the Chief's car and it was 2 tone red & white. Again truck was like new. They then spent like $7k to have it painted all red instead of 2 tone. We would have been better off buying a new one in red instead. Why would a Fire Dept buy a red Whaler to only paint it yellow???

Nantucket Sleighride posted 06-26-2009 06:29 AM ET (US)     Profile for Nantucket Sleighride  Send Email to Nantucket Sleighride

The Arizona Fire Department chose to cover the Red gelcoat hull of the 17' Boston Whaler with yellow paint.
I would imagine that the primary color used on their emergency vehicles must also be yellow.

I have restored the boat to it's original Red color.
As I explained to my wife "Boston Whalers" cannot sink,
however they can flip upside down in stormy seas.
The bright Red hull of this Whaler should be very easy to spot from a Coast Guard helicopter if that unlikely event ever occurs.

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee is the perfect tow vehicle for this 17' Boston Whaler!
Not only is it a 4X4 with the high torque 4.0 engine it also happens to be a close match in color. If you look closely at the rear quarter panels on the Jeep you will see "Boston Whaler" logos. ?action=view¤t=IMG_0091.jpg

I've had way too many to recall over my 55 years! I remember I did a mental inventory when I was in my twenties, and came up with over 30. Most of them were little rowboats and dinghies, many of which I built myself. The biggest I owned (and built) was a 24' houseboat. I just recently bought my first Whaler, an '83 project with a 35 hp Johnson and galvanized trailer. Got the whole package for $750. The hull is very clean, but needs new wood, and the motor is a work in progress. It has very low hours, but needs a carb rebuild, water pump, and rubber shock mounts.

I LOVE this place.

10 or 12 boats owned over the years.

Currently four in the yard if you count the canoe and two kayaks.

God Bless You All !
