I have heard on other boards to stay away from johnson engines, and heard a little bit about the envinrude ficht problems. Has anyone had a problem with a 115 evinrude or a 150 evinrude. I am looking at a 16 dauntless, one with an 115 evinrude the other with 90 honda 4 stroke. Both are leftovers and the evinrude has the options i want.

Also looking at leftover 18 dauntless with 135 mercury optimax or a 2002 18 dauntless with the 150 evinrude for about the same price. I like the new layout of the 2002 18, but i am worried about the engine.

Any input out there?

controller,
I have a 2001 16 Dauntless with a 115 Evinrude Ficht. I had one problem with and oil leak that was caused by 2 bolts that sheared off the power head (Defective bolts). BMOC covered it under warranty. Anyway it is a great engine so far but my hours are very low so I will keep my fingers crossed.
It appears that 2000 & 2001 is when they got the bugs worked out on the Evinrude Ficht engines. Mercury Opti Max is going through similar issues but it looks like they are working through it also.

The 16 is a heavy boat around 1400lbs (without engine, gas, oil and gear) so I would go with the 115, which is max rated Horsepower. No smaller than 90. A member on this board has a 90 Honda and another a 100 four stroke Yam I believe with good results. Bbear and Tallydon

As a matter of preference I will not buy a Merc do to services issues others have had.

If you can swing the 18 Dauntless I would go for it. My preference would be for a Four Stroke next time.
All the above is just my very limited experience and there are others on this board who know far more than I

Hi, Controller.

Go for the 16 with the Honda.

Controller you are gonna confuse yourself big time. You are on at least 2 forums asking the same questions and opinions are like....you know! just make up your mind and buy the damn thing because with 50 different voices, you are gonna get confused or wind up buying a Scout because ED P said so.

Between you and Milwaukee asking about canvas...were are running out of bandwidth here:)

Hope you don't take that the wrong way...just busting your chops. It is the truth though. You have your mind set on a 16 but maybe uptick to an 18, ask too many people and next thing you are buying a 25 Hunter sailboat.

Like I am one to talk about # of posts....sorry! I am why we have limited bandwidth:)

I only have two comments. I just saw the new 18 Dauntless, with the new console, and I think this is one of the best looking consoles Whaler has come up with in a long time. It's actually somewhat similar to the earlier Montauk/Outrage consoles. The only thing I don't like about it is the limited instrument space. Mercury is determined to sell the dual 3" gauge "Smartcraft" system, so that's all the room there is for instruments. No room for analog instrumentation. I'll bet this console is going to show up in the new "170", whatever it may be.

The 135 Mercury Optimax has been completely trouble free, so don't worry about getting one of those.

I have made a decision.

I will most likely sign a contract on a 2001 16 Dauntless that the BW dealer took in trade after the owner had it for 3 months and decided he wanted a cuddy.

I saw the boat today, and it was flawless, and no bottom paint.

The boat comes with a ez-load galv trailer, ski pylon, bimini top and boot, comfort package, standard horizon eclispe vhf, 3ft whip attenna, dealer will prep and bottom paint(boat will be docked in salt water), full fuel tank, 2 hours with a captain for delivery.

engine is a 2001 115 merc with factory warranty from merc until Aug 24, 2002 and dealer added a 4 year engine warranty from Marine Innovations.

I think i got a good deal, $20,000?

It sounds like you got a nice little boat. My dad has a Dauntless 16 with a Merc 90, and with a full load it could use a bit more power. I suspect you'll be happy with the 115. Price sounds good too, especially when you consider most yards (at least where I live) will charge $700-$800 to prep and bottom paint a boat that size.

Good decision and a good deal! I think you will be extremely happy with the 16.

Good luck with your new ride...

Good price. All the extras add up.
Is the Engine a 115 Merc four stroke?
You are gonna love it!
