Just read that the South Haven, Mich. lighthouse may go up for sale. The Coast Guard has begun the process of declaring it surplus federal property. What are they thinking!!!!! The Herald Palladium newspaper article does indicate that it would continue to be operated as a navigational aid, but at what cost to the potential new owner???

Interesting article....I hope they don't decide to sell it. I don't think the S.H. Maritime Museum would have the funds to maintain this structure appropriately. It recieves considerable "wear and tear" during the winter months (special thanks go out to February for hurling frozen chunks of Lake Michigan at it non stop for weeks on end) and also manages to get a fresh coat of Krylon every other year or so (thanks to the local juveniles).

That said, it is an interesting proposition. They'll have to tread carefully: will they charge admission to walk the pier to cover some of the maintenance costs? What happens if they can't afford maintenance? Will South Haven be stuck with the bill - or will the structure deteriorate further?

Great pickup LKS - I hardly ever read the HP online anymore....typically such a crummy paper...Last month there was an article in the Chicago Tribune about a proposed ferry service from St. Joseph (MI) to Racine (WI) and the HP made no mention of it at all. I can't believe I grew up reading it every day! (the HP)

The CG is looking to surplus most/all the lighthouses. There is (was) no line item in the budget for lighthouse maintenance. All maintenance done on them came from some other program (in Alaska, the CG put $1 million into the lighthouses in 3 years). They are a "nice to have". But as an aid to navigation, they are no longer needed. GPS, radar, plotters, GPS maps, etc.

Yup, I know, they are an incredible visual aid.

The first step is to try and lease them, if no takers, they get excessed to BLM.

Sign of the times. They cost a lot of money. Up here in Alaska, the CG has leased out a number of them to lighthouse societies and one has become a bed & breakfast. Others were surplused to BLM.
