Hey guys n girls. Well picked up my new '88 15 BW sport today. When I went to check the VIN #'s to match them with the title I first read those " printed " #'s that are inside the transom. They didnt match the title, the broker dude showed me the other vin #'s on the back of transom {they matched!}
The guy told me he has no idea what inside transom #'s are for & he seen them on all BW's
WhY 2 sets of #'s?

Alan,

The number stenciled on the inside of the transom (and inside the bow locker on newer boats as well) is Whaler's serial number used to identify the hull itself. All Whalers have this number in some form.

On boats built starting in November of 1972 were (are) required to have a HIN (Hull Identification Number). Read all about it here: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/

I don't think my '96ish Montauk has a second
set of numbers. It has the HIN on the
transom and in the bowlocker. I suspect
BW went to using the the HIN.

Alan: it's an HIN, not a VIN, but same
concept.

Chuck

Thanks guys,
Tom I read the info. provided in the link, prob. should have checked the website first.
And also will remember it's a HIN not a VIN!
I kinda knew that one anyway. Im kinda tired from the days adventure, first time trailering a boat in 21 years, my little 4 cyl. pickup performed like a champ. Good thing it aint a bigger boat though!
thanks, alan
