The Model listed on the plate on the inside of the hull says 17 and the serial number on the outside of the hull is BWCN - 5910B292. Is this a Montauk or something else. If it isn't a Montauk what is the difference between it and a Montauk?
thanks for your help

Ahoy, Pops.

The "17" hull was introduced the same year as the Montauk, I think it was 1974, but many different models have been built on that hull.

What makes a 17 is the hull. What makes a Montauk is the equippage of its 17 hull: bow and side rails, fiberglass center console with the Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS), cooler seat in front of the console, etc.

Go to the top of the page and click on Cetacea. In that section you will find pictures of many of the different 17' Whalers. In the Reference section you will find an excellent article on the history and models of 17s.

Thanks for the help. By the way, this is a 1992 model. Ok so this "17" has a fiberglass center console, cooler seat in front of console. bow and side rails. and rps. Therefore it is a Montauk. After reading the reference article I see they also made the Sport in 1992. What was the Sport equipped with.
thanks again

Sport had nothing. 2 twart seats and a side console. Your boat should say Montauk on the side.

Your boat is a Montauk as you have surmised. It was built in February of 1992 as a '92 model.

The "17" was first called the "17" starting with the 1977 model year. It is actually the same size as its predecessor which was called the "16". It gets a little confusing because the two hulls are the same size but are strictly speaking called different names. Collectively we refer to this size of hull as 16/17. The Montauk was introduced in 1974 and thus spans both of these hulls which makes even more confusing.

The 16/17 hull was equipped as many differnt models as can be seen in the refernce section:
