Check this out [oblique reference to boat for sale on eBay advertised as a Whaler "MALIBU" model]. Did I miss a model or does this belong in Jimh's latest page?

I doubt that [boat shown on eBay] is actually a BW. It probably just had the decals put on it. At best it may be a "splashed" hull but it doesn't even look that close. The seller claims his family owned it since new. I wonder if they know that it isn't a BW. Sounds shady.

[Boat shown on eBay] doesn't look like a whaler.

No, [boat shown on eBay is] NOT a Whaler. Doesn't take much to slap a Whaler decal on anything. Apparently doesn't take much to confuse people either.

It is however a POS:)

[Link to boat shown on eBay, which I suspect will tend to be very temporary, leading to an annoying condition called "link-rot" where hyper links on a website point to links that no longer work. I changed the link to just the picture, not the auction for the misrepresented boat.]

I asked him "What's the serial number?" This will tell us the make of it.

Serial number won't tell us anything. IF the boat has a HIN (Hull Identification Number), that MAY tell us the manufacturer.
It will only have a HIN if it was made after 1984. First three letters of the HIN indicate the manufacturer but if the boat came from a state that did not require a title to a state that did, or if it was built before 1984 it may have acquired a HIN with a MIC (Manufacturers Identification Code) the denotes "home built" or "new title".
Here's where to research an MIC: Hyperlink

[I have edited this thread as noted. The reason I have removed hyperlinks to "auctions" on eBay is because of the temporary nature of these links. I do not anticipate that eBay will maintain these links and pictures for at least two years into the future. I do not wish to have the FORUM filled with "link-rot". --jimh]

To the best of my knowledge and according to some factory documentation I have, Whaler did not market a model called a MALIBU.

I have seen this type of boat somewhere. And so far it eludes me......

To Tom W Clark, sorry you did not perceive my sense of humor in this,,,but I think your comments about confusing people are out of line.
Yeah, my 03 Jim Armstrong

Relax, I got your humor. I wasn't referring to you but rather the seller. I have seen many boats for sale on Ebay and elsewhere that were not Whalers but labeled as such and it always amazes me...

Gee – I wonder if the seller will also include a Malibu Ken and Barbie to go with it ;o)

I think some wag here suggested that after "Conquest" and "Ventura", the name Whaler would next use would be Malibu

Looks like and old brand called Ski Barge from the 1960"s, or at best a rolled gunnel knock off of it from that great mecca of boat manufacturing creativity in our deep south (FL).
