I was wondering after reading the posts about the reduced HP rating on the Montauk, how significant the power to weight ratio is on boats.

Every vehicle has a maximum top speed that can't be exceeded because it becomes unstable or friction physically limits it. If I put a 500HP engine in my car it's acceleration would change dramatically but its top speed would be limited by friction, wind resistance, tire falling off, etc.

Airplanes have similar issues. Climb performance and payload can be increased with additional horse power but top speed is limited.

Does anyone have any experience with measuring the affects of changes in horse power? Obviously the acceleration would change but is there a rule of thumb among boat designers like the increase in top speed is the square of the added horse power?

Here are some numbers from the 2001 Catalog power/weight (max hp/max wt)
Impact .0375
13 sport .0428
17 Montauk .0707
16 Daun .0676
18 Daun .0625
22 Daun .0763
21 Out .0641
23 Out .0909
26 Out .1047
28 Out .1395
New Monty .0545

I hope I got those right. Among the small boats, 18 and less, the old Montauk is the clear winner and the new Montauk is a little less than the average of .0559HP/LB(I used 1650 max and 90HP). 115 (116.66) HP would put it on par with the old Montauk and give us the Full Monty.

Wrong forum and just read about Clark's rule of thumb for top speed. Still wondering about acceleration.
