This past summer I upgraded from my old blue 13 footer to a '89 17' Super Sport Limited and I'd like to know if there are other SS limited owners out there who have done any customizing. Because it has no exterior wood I fine myself yearning for the dim glow of mahogany. I'm thinking of adding some wood to the console to house an instrument panel and general light switches. I'd also like to add to console guards, as you Whaler folks know, those windshields are nothing to hold on to. Let me know who you are and what you've done.

I have a 1991 SS and have only done tiny mods as yet. Like you I miss the look of wood, so I added a wood grab handle on the console side (For the Lady!) A strip along the top of the console, mainly to cover the previous owners drilling attempts when mounting electronics. The last thing is a holder for my GPS. I want to add some more, but my house is already jealous of the time I spend with the boat!! I plan to re-do the electrics and wiring, as and when time/ money permit. I also am planning a wooden seat back, but am having trouble refining the plans in my head. Happy Whaling!

I have an 87 Super Sport Limited, and have gotten rid of all the wood and chrome. We use it for duck hunting in saltwater and I hate maintainance. We carpeted the deck, reupholstered, removed the beam-width storage seat from in front of the consoles, moved the batteries forward, rewired, trying to add a kicker, did a bunch of stuff. Destroyed any value as a "classic", but it's perfect for us.

I have a 1984 17' Super Sport and I tell ya, it aint easy:
Whaler lovers hate me cause the varnish aint bright enough.
Save the Rainforest hates me cause its all mahogany.
PETA hates me cause I use it to mistreat fish
(OK,well I try anyway!)
My kids hate me cause I dont take them everytime I fish.
And my wife hates me cause she suspects I love my boat more than her. (I'm invoking the 5th on this subject.)
A color photograph of a 1963 Montauk stuck to the fiberglass or starboard is as close to being a classic as any reasonable, sane man should want.
