I have been hunting Montauks for a few months now and the folks on this site have been great help. I haven't bought one yet, but I feel that I'm getting close. I have seen and driven several in the last couple months, all different vintages, a 1977, 1992, 1987 and a 1990. My question is, are there certain year Montauks that I should stay away from? I think the trim material used can be somewhat of a personal preference, but are there any years where the Montauk was just not as well made as other years? I read the articles in the reference section, and they were incredibly helpful. I just want to make sure I stay away from any potential pitfalls.
thanks

p.s. I also realize the importance of motor make and condition.

Condition is key. Late 1976 and up are identical hull wise and should do the job.

They had some foam "warping" problems in 1985. It is easy to spot, the sides of the boat will be warped. The boats were still sound but it looks odd. I went on a factory tour in 1991 and the customer service folks at that time said this happens to all of the 17's somewhat but a run of 85's had it worse.
