The Montauk is one of a kind by design. There really isn't another boat like it that I can think of. Twin sponson hull for incredible stability; the squared off topside bow shape; A good mix between deep vee and shallow draft; Great for family or fish; The low freeboard and the way the side rails accentuate the look as it sits in the water; The classic Whaler center console that looks like few others (especially when there is some teak on it!; The timeless shape of this hull that is a result of the functional details which whaler built into the hull --not a shape that is simply there due to the designer's eye for lines -- like many copycats.

So at the end of the day, like its looks or not, the Montauk is the gold standard, even today, for which all medium size center consoles are judged by. How many times have you heard someone say of a competitive boat "this is a great boat; it is just like a 17' whaler".

As my cousin once said, "the Montauk is the best damn 16 foot 7 inch boat on the market!"

Amen. As a member of the choir, I don't mind being preached at.

I will take my Montauk 10 miles or more into the Atlantic and never think twice about it.

My favorite Whaler and any boat made for that matter, and the Teak accents really do make it look more Classic. I think it has the nicest center console ever made, even the `18 Outrage agreed!! Jack.

I think the console could be improved:
- Translucent top (like a UPS truck) to light
the inside.
- Route the cables down in the starboard aft
corner (instead of the middle of the
starboard side), which would free up a
little floor space inside the console.
- Route the oil hose down right next to the
tank rather than in the middle of the
floor.
- Move the floor down so it's only about 1"
off the deck to increase space in the
console
- A knee pad above the aft door instead of
the wimpy cup holders.
- Bigger port side door.

My ideal console would have a completely
open back with a tambour door (like a roll
top desk), and shelves optimized for a
collection of Pelican cases. Slide up the
door, pull out the appropriate Pelican,
close the door. No standing on your head
to get things out. No maneuvering the
Pelicans to the door. No taking everything
out to get the Pelican on the bottom.

All of the above based on 97ish console
(actually an a '96, I think).

I like some of those console ideas. A full size aft door with shelves inside would make storage much more eficient. Same with enlarging the port side door. The only Pelican case I have on board is for my underwater video system, which won't fit in the console, so it stores under the stern seat. I like the console storage for life jackets, rain gear coats and etc. Rather than a tranclucent top on the console it would be a simple matter to install a light that would come on when the door is opened.
I am going to give the console light a try as soon as it warms up enough to install one.

The RPS could use a couple changes. Most of the time I run standing up and using it as a leaning post, it would be nice if it could be locked in place. The storage space in the backrest needs some work but I haven't figured out yet how to improve it.

I guess if that's all I have to bitch about I must be pretty happy with the boat.

Hi, Chuck.

Most of the "improvements" you suggest are matters of individual taste and style.

I have made one improvement to mine, one you missed: Get rid of the oil tank altogether and put a JohnnySuziRude EFI 4 stroke 70 on the transom (transom improvement, too).
