Hey Ohio high school student. I grew up in Bay Village on Cleveland's west side. Have 22 OR (pic 45). Tell us about your Whaler.

Ohio is a great place to grow up. You are lucky. David R

Don't live there anymore - but spent about 20 years growing up in Port Clinton. My dad owned a marina there (Jacknife Marina). Fishing there used to be good - my son and I went up a couple years ago with 18.6 Outrage, hardly caught anything - 1 walleye, 3 perch and about 10 sheephead (considered by many to be a Lake Erie trash fish). Hope the fishing has improved. Mav

Mav- You hit a bad day. The fishing on Lake Erie is just fine. Grew up fishing two steel perch rods with minows or worms on a spreader. Common to bring up four jumbo perch bang, bang. Fog horn at Sandusky Bay was my favorite fishing hole. Although, Walleyes off Kelly/Bass Islands were fun-took my grandfather out on an August trip for years. The sheephead were/are trash fish. Fun fight, but bony and taste like a mouth full of cotton. Not the ocean going variety which are quite good eating. Fond memories!!!! David

I live in North Olmsted. We usually put our Whaler in at Rocky River. My parents also own a place out on Marblehead, so we're out there a lot too. Spend many weekends on the north side of Kelly's.

A bad day, for sure - I fished Niagra Reef, Clinton reef, and some secret spots, and only managed one walleye. Back in the 60s and early 70s we'd fill a boat, and you're right, 2 perch at a time on a spreader - true! I've since talked with some locals around port Clinton who indicated that fishing was no longer like the old days, but they thought that 20 perch a day was good. I'd say 200 would be a good day. Mav

Maverick,
The fishing is better than the old days. We now have a 30 perch limit. If you can limit under 1 hour it is a geat day. If you can limit under 2 hours it is a good day. You can still pull them up 2 at a time on spreaders. The walleye fishing is incredible, you would not believe all of the charter boats. It seems like most people come here for the walleyes, it is an absolute zoo on the weekends. It may take you 1 1/2 hours to drive from Marblehead to Port Clinton.

I live in PGH.PA. but have my 73` `16 Currituck in Conneaut,OH. at the Conneaut Boat Club. Conneaut is 5 miles from the PA. border and 78 miles East of Cleveland and 35 miles West of Erie,PA. I would like to get together with some locals and just chew the fat on Classic Whalers. My buddy near PGH. brings his 1968 `13 Sport up and we go Whalering in both of our Classics!! Jack.

David, Actually I grew up in Bay Village too. I wanted to live in Bay, but I had to decide if I wanted just a house in Bay, or a house and a Whaler in North Olmsted. So... Go Eagles!

I was a Coastie at Marblehead Station in 1969 and 1970. Took the family through there about eight years ago. I had forgotten what a neat place that was. Should go back there just to boat sometime...
