Your opinions please...which is more stable for the "Admiral" to ride in---17' Montauk; 17' Dauntless; or 17' Outrage. I can fish from anything if I have to. All are "previously enjoyed" boats. Thanks for any help.

Hi, Jimm.

Which OR-17 are you looking at?

There was one made in the early '90s that was classic in design but too short for its width so it was inclined to porpoise.

The newer "SeaRay" OR-17 is a much bigger, heavier boat and is smoother. More stable? I don't think so.

For stability, I would go for the Montauk, but I'm not sure we see "stable" the same.

For comfortable ride, the later version OR-17.

Jim - realize that stability and smoothness varies as the size and weight of the boat - in the limit, a 50' yacht is pretty stable and smooth while a 13' canoe can be quite unstable. Basically for stability, you want length, width and weight.

I have a 1996 17' OR which is very nice to fish from and takes relatively big water nicely. My boat is noticeably wider and with more freeboard than a Montauk - which is a very nice boat in it's own right. I have not seen a Dauntless. ---- Jerry/Idaho

Just my views - My wife hates riding in my Montauk in ANY kind of chop. It's really rough. Things are slamming around and it jars your back teeth. When your stopped the boat is really stable side to side. My buddy had a 17 Outrage that rides a little better, but it didn't have the rails all the way around it. Some people don't like the rails, but they make me feel alot safer, especially with kids on the boat.

The Montauk is the best strategic move. My wife loves ours, but does tend to complain a wee bit when the bay gets choppy. This has opened the door to a discussion on moving up to a Classic 22.....she's convinced now that we should try to find one. This after years of convincing her to get the Montauk!

Have you thought about a classic 18 outrage??? You could get into one for about the same price as the "classic" 17 outrage, and in my (and many other people's) opinion get into a much nicer boat...
