Does anyone have any experience with a 1991/1992 Mercury 8 hp outboard? I am thinking of purchasing it as a kicker for my 88 Montauk. They say it is in very good condition and runs fine. I dont know anything about Mercury motors, as I have a Johnson 88 SPL on the Montauk. Thanks for the advice.

Just be sure it is a long shaft, 20".

that motor is o.k. not my first choice. as stated make sure its a longshaft. you will have to run a seperate line because the fuel fitting is different. helps to run a water seperator then you can tap off of it for the second line if your 8hp has the same gas requirements (re: both run pre-mixed fuel). the only probs with that motor i have encountered is is does`nt like the salt and is a little weak on the head plate gasket (prone to leak sometimes). i do not care for the duel cable throttle style or the "shift in handle" feature either. too much dr. gismo.... Also its a little more of a bear to do a waterpump on some of those because of the way the shift mechanism disconects. one other thing: alot of rods and plastic ball snaps for advance and throttle. my buddy had one on his olympic for years and had very little probs with it until it blew a lower main seal. steve out.
