According to an AP Wire report carried Tuesday, May 28, 2002, Genichi Kawakami, 90, a former president of Yamaha, who was nicknamed the "emperor" after he built his father's company into a major manufacturer of musical instruments, electronic goods and motorcycles, died Saturday in a hospital in central Japan.
Kawakami became president in 1950 and expanded Yamaha's operations to become the world's largest piano maker as well as helping to start the Yamaha Music School in 1954. He also led the company into new fields and in 1955 set up the Yamaha Motor Co., now a major motorcycle manufacturer (and outboard engine maker).
