I've just watched USA play Mexico in the Soccer World Cup. Against all predictions the USA won and the score was 2-0.I know soccer isn't publicized a great deal over there but you should try to watch some of the games. USAs next game is against Germany in the quarter final!

watched the game also jacko, fantastic match with the u.s. getting pushed all over the field, yet effectively scoring with the quick attack.

pushing reyna to the outside sped up the offensive pushes, same opportunities that he bypassed in his previous two matches playing centermidfldr when he would hold the ball and slow down their upfield runs.

mexican side got a bit chippy there in the last 10 minutes of play, no? 10 yellow cards and 1 red?

maybe the germans will be gentle...

Here am I, the publisher of this website, hardly mentioning that my hometown Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, and you guys are talking

Here is a story:

Several years ago the World Cup was hosted in Pontiac, Michigan at the Silverdome (capacity 80,000). I guess it was a success, but there was really not much local interest. I think most of the people who went were from out of town or out of this hemisphere.

At that time my wife had a retail Pharmacy in nearby Bloomfield Hills, and it was open on Sundays. She and I were up there one Sunday morning so I could do some work on her computer system.

This fellow came into the store all dressed up in Soccer regalia, head to toe, to pick up some newspaper, etc.

"Well," I said to him, "at least one person will be going to that soccer match at the 'dome today."

Oh! What a firestorm I started. Turns out he was the main organizer, promoter of the event, and he lights into me with scorn. My attitude is all wrong; the media has it all wrong. This thing is a huge success. People love soccer everywhere but here...on and on and on. He's sick of people who don't understand soccer putting it down.

I sensed this was a touchy subject with the fellow.

I still remember the first soccer game I televised. We were originating a broadcast for some cable channel of a big game being played in some professional league, a kind of exhibition game here in the states. One of our old stage hands game into the truck and sat down. He'd been watching the match through the first half.

"Man," he said, "I don't think this game is gonna catch on. It is about as exciting as watching paint dry."

Now, have I told you about the Red Wings...

I am really pleased there is some interest in the USA for the 'Beautiful Game' as played by Brazil and probably no one else. Best of luck in the next round.

Jim I'm sorry to start a topic which is about soccer and not boating. I suppose soccer is slightly related considering at the moment The World Cup is being played in Japan and we know how they love their whalers.!!
