Last night was the first time I've been able to put the boat in the water. I purchased a 1989 Newport around Christmas and have been modifying it since, a little at a time, to a Newtauk. I still miles to go before I sleep on this boat but it's together. I finally got tired of waiting for the backrest for my RPS that I have a friend reworking. Took it out in the Delaware River for a short cruise and it handled flawlessly. After about a 10-15 minute run, I let my son take control and he spent more time behind the wheel than me! All that work, blood sweat and toil...but I enjoyed coaching him on running the boat. He just loved the experience.

I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time on the water now that I have the boat back together. Two more days until my summer vacation starts!!!

Thanks to everyone who's given me's taken me a while but it was well worth it!

Yeah, one of the best things is to let the youngsters play and get experience.

Going the other way...I think one of the great thrills I got was after bringing back to life my father-in-law's dad's 67 13 footer (to as original as possible), the look on his face and the tear in his eye as he remembered his dad letting him ride around the North East River in Maryland 30 years ago... they say was priceless.

With in the next 5 years...chances are good this Whaler will see the fifth generation of the same family standing on her deck. sometimes life can be good...

Unfortunately I ran my father over and killed him. Boating is still a sore spot with Ma:)

Dave did you get rid of the console?

Fortunately, I didn't run over my dad or I wouldn't have gotten the Whaler when he passed on.:)

Took my kids out last Saturday and let the 8 year old pilot at trolling speed. He loved it! Problem was the two year old got mad. Let her take control (with my hand on the wheel)and was promptly bit. Told my son he'd probably have to fight his sister for the boat.

It was really a great moment, first, having him help and then allowing him to experience the fruit of his labor. It looked like dad knew what he was doing afterall!

Bigshot, I sold the console through ebay and got $450 for it. It worked out great. Now I have the 5 year old wanting to go out...I wonder if the poor wife will miss us? Nah!!! She'll enjoy the quiet!

Thanks again for all the help, without this site, I'd still be trying to figure out what a Newport was!!!
