On my sail boat's chart table there is room for a laptop...

Has anyone used marine specific PC based GPS software? Can I just buy the BlueChart CD and plug in a serial or USB receiver? Seems like it will be cheeper then a 2006...

Hi, Pete.

My Mapsource program offers to become a GPS color display when I have my GPSMAP 162 plugged in to my PC.

That leads me to believe that Mapsource, at least, allows your PC or laptop to be used as a real time 15" color display for Garmin products. Special wiring might be required.

I am sure that Garmin can give you more detail and correct any errors in my understanding.

I use the Nobletec charts and the deLorme road atlas on my laptop that is interfaced with a GPS via the USB port. Works great!

To unlock the BlueCharts and see them on your
PC, you have to have a s/n for a BlueChart
supporting Garmin AND have that Garmin
connected. Otherwise you just get the
basemap.

The cheapest BlueChart compatible Garmin is
I think the eTrex Legend at about $249.

That 2006 is more waterproof than most (all?)
laptops.

Pete,

Check out Fugawi at Fugawi.com Looks like a pretty good program and will interface with most GPS receivers. I downloaded their demo and hooked up my Garmin handheld to it, pretty slick.

Pete - Suggest you look at http://joe.mehaffey.com/ it is full of GPS-related information that I have used in the past. Have no experience with BlueCharts. I use CAPN, and can see why the USCG chose it for their nav needs. GoodLuck! Casey
