Most people I know like the 20hp on the SS edition or an 15hp tiller version.

We have an 11' with console, and have a 15 hp Merc on it. With one person on board, it runs great; put two adults on board and it won't plane. If you can, go with the max hp. Happy Whalin'!

yea mine has a side colsole. I am going tomorow to make arangments on a 20hp merc classic. Althow people talk bad about merc's the one I have know has and still does run great. Any one near or around boston intersted in it. Still runs great and would make a great kikker for a bigger boat. It is an 1987 or 88. not sure.

My father just bought a "new" 1999 model 11 from a dealer, last one they had, and he has a Merc 25 on it (max rating is 20). It's way too fast, he won't open it up, but it's still slower to plane than he thought it'd be. I'd go with a 20 if you can find one.

I have a 20hp on my SS11. It planes fine with 2 people but it needs more top speed. I almost got caught in a lighting storm Saturday afternoon because of this. Everyone was racing in to beat the storm and I just about didn't make it because the boat is so slow. Right now average top speed is 25mph. I don't know how you feel about overpowering, but I think the boat (at least the SS version) really needs about 30hp. That should put it in the low to mid 30's which would be a nice improvement.
Bigshot posted 07-01-2002 02:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
No offense but I would NOT want to do over 30 in an 11' boat. You want to go fast, buy a 13 or 15'.
11 footer posted 07-01-2002 03:59 PM ET (US)     Profile for 11 footer  Send Email to 11 footer
BIGSHOT i think you are right. even 25mph in an 11 seams fast. In the rough water that i like to go in going to fast would mean a a lot of pounding. I am going to go with the 20hp.

0 and WantaWhale I feal that overpowering a boat as old as mine (1975) would put a lot of unwanted stress on the boat. There are small stress cracks in the bow now.

Bigshot posted 07-01-2002 04:05 PM ET (US)     Profile for Bigshot  Send Email to Bigshot
Those are not stress cracks...just age marks:)

My 13' with a 25 does close to 30 and at WOT it gets a bit scary(per say). It is just a law of physics on a trihull which in some ways is a semi-displacement. The more lenght the greater the speed. Therefore a 13' with a 25 might even be faster than a 11' with a 25hp. I know my 13 is much faster than an 11 with a 15hp.

WantaWhale posted 07-01-2002 06:50 PM ET (US)     Profile for WantaWhale  Send Email to WantaWhale
What about Jet ski's guys? Even my old stand up from the 80's would go into the 30's. I really don't see much diff between the 11 and 13 (15 is another matter)

11 Footer- I was not implying you should go fast in rough water as you really can't-not even in a bigger boat without having one big back ache the next day. Where I live (Gulf of Mexico) we have a problem with these really annoying storms that just pop-up out of no where during the summer months. The sky can be perfectly blue but 1 hour later a major thunderstorm is coming on FAST. Thats when I would like that extra speed to outrun the rough stuff and the lighting. When you are talking rough water how far are you going out?

WantaWhale ......................jet ski's are the dumest things ever invented..

If you have ever ridden in a 13 you will find that it handles a lot better then an 11.

whan i mean rough. i mean going out out of (boston horbor). going half was to the cape and then fighting the swells to get back.

(mouth of the mearimac.......)

once a year up the cost of (rockey maine). puting the boat in on a small river and than go about 10 miles up the cost to a local horbor and comeing back in the afternoon.(ride back is really bad) people tell me i need a biger boat but that would take the fun out of it. (as im sure you know the 11 is a very wet rid in the chop).

I don't want to step on your toes, but given the replies to your question thus far, I think it might be helpful for others who may jump into this thread to know a little more about your age/experience, which may be relevant to their comments on the hp that may be appropriate for your Whaler.

11 footer ,

I am sorry, I didn't realize your age.
You probably should be asking your family if you intend to repower. I got my first boat when I was 10 so I know where you are coming from. Be careful going out that far, I hope you have a radio or a cell phone??

Why would you ever buy a 20 hp when you can spend another 200 and get a 25? You don't have to go WOT.....

DOOF!

Actually down here it is only $100 more:)

WantaWhale posted 07-03-2002 03:47 PM ET (US)     Profile for WantaWhale  Send Email to WantaWhale
It costs more than that in parts if you upgrade later, at least with a johnson. A johnson 20 is the same as the 25 and 30. I checked into this and and the difference
is a larger carb and a different intake.
The problem is that the carb alone is $200.00. Total ball park price was about 700 for parts and labor. I am not going to do anything right now as I am thinking about getting a Montuak or Outrage for long range stuff and keep the SS11 for the river and bay.

11 Footer-Good you have a cell phone. I also always wear my life jacket just in case.

Well tommorow is the big day..they are having a fleet of tall sailing ships in town to celebrate the 4th and the Tricentianal of our City. Supposed to be thousands of boats in the water . Going to launch early to get a good view for pictures.

Hope everyone has a great 4th!

I just returned from delivering my son's Montauk to his buyer. and picking up the 11' Tender he offered in the deal.

This ('98) Tender has a perfect hull, as in PERFECT. But the wood is the poorest quality wood with the poorest quality factory finish I ever saw on a Whaler!

I am going to redo all of the wood, and probably convert her to a Super Sport.

That brings me to the point of my post, and its relevance: Tohatsu offers a 15", 18hp, electric start, 4 stroke outboard with T&T that weighs 114lb and lists for about $3K.

Obviously that is a lot more than a 20hp Merc without the amenities, but it seems to me like an unbeatable package for a 11'SS.

Anyone have experience with this engine? Comments?

TnT on a 18hp? What is this world coming too. Why not throw a windlass on it while you are at it?
WantaWhale posted 07-09-2002 02:35 PM ET (US)     Profile for WantaWhale  Send Email to WantaWhale
Nothing wrong with having Tnt. It sure is nice when you are about to beach and don't have time to reach back for shallow drive. Tnt on a 4stroke at only 114lb is fantastic. My 20hp 2stroke with manual TnT is listed at 119lbs.

J.B, I have only know a few people to own Tohatsu (2 strokes) but all were pleased with them and said they were very quiet. Just make sure dealer is in your area for parts, etc.
I'd love to hear how it turns out and good luck with the SS11. I love mine and don't plan on selling it even when I get a larger whaler.

Hi, Wanta...
For now, my 11' is still a Tender, so can't legally take the 18.

I found a '96 Johnson 10 hp 4 stroke at a decent price and I bought that.

I'll let you know about that.

Once you get it converted to SS, whaler will install correct placard for 20Hp. My orignal bill of sales says SS but I found out it had been converted by the dealer before it was ever sold. Previous owner bought it from a local yaht yard and they did the conversion. Did a good job except for changing out the placard. Whaler was very nice to my family when they had this done for my birthday. They did a great job of installing the placard and reinstalling whaler logos. Only thing I noticed was placard says 11 sport instead of supersport. Oh well close enough...

Fletch

Thanks, Fletch. Very useful info.

I am actually thinking of doing the SS conversion with teak, rather than mahogany.

But, well, that's down the line for after the Outrage is sold.

Then I will be looking for a nice 20hp 4 stroke for her.

Nobody makes a 20hp 4 stroke......yet:)

Teak would be nioce but if you oil it, it will stain your clothes when you sit.

WantaWhale posted 07-10-2002 02:41 PM ET (US)     Profile for WantaWhale  Send Email to WantaWhale
I wonder how much it would cost to do it in teak? The orignal wood from whaler is about 1000.00 or so I was told. Well my wood is faded and I am going to have it redone and was quoted 500.00 so that 1000.00 is really not that bad.

It sounds like you are downsizing. Belive it or not there are some advantages to this. About 2 weeks ago I was racing back to the launches to beat a bad lighting storm. 3 boats, including a new montauk, come blowing by me. They beat me to the ramps by 2-3 min yet I was out of the water long before the montauk guy as my boat was much easier to get on the trailer. Those new montauks look to bigger than the older ones...

So have you tried out the 9.9 yet?

regards, Fletch

$500 to do an 11' HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

Get some good stripper and remove the wood. Strip, sand, & varnish. Will take you 2 weekends of work. Pretty satisfying when you are done. You can leave the console in the boat if you want. If it is not peeling then you only have to sand and varnish a few coats...will take a day.

Well if it's that easy, I'll offer anyone $250.00 to do it as long as it looks factory when finished.
