i just teste drove a 79 mantauck and i found the sterring to be a little stiff, the owner said this was normal. I jave never driven a older smaller boat before, does anyone have advice on how stiff the steering is supposed to be?

This is Not Normal...... The steering should work freely through the entire range. Stiff steering can be caused by several things.
1. Steering Cable (may need replacing)
2. Steering Arm that goes through the engine brackets and tube may be corroded. (Remove and clean, or clean the steering tube and Replace steering arm with a stainless steel one....
3. Steering unit itself has problems

I have a 1978 Montauk and my steering is smooth through the entire range. I just worked on a friend of mines 1977 Montauk and his steering arm was frozen in the engine brackets tube. I had to soak it with rust free and then pound on it awhile before it finally came out. He was fortunate that all we ended up doing is cleaning up the enigne rackets and reinstalling the steering arm. His steering is now smooth through the entire range.

and in addition,... older engines can have the grease get solid in the engine "pivot"? or whatever you call it.....mine had to be heated to clear it out.i think the same can happen to the tilt pivot.good luck...lm

thanku...when u say steriing unit may need replacing, what exactly is the steering unit and is it expensive to replace?

i'm assuming that would be the "steering gearbox"...under the console...what the steering wheel is attached to.
you'll need to eliminate each of those possibilities.
some naturally are simpler and less expensive to correct than others.good luck...lm
