I just got my montauk and want to get a
bimini or sun top for it.

Does anybody make a standard top or will I have to have one made?

The montauk is a 1980.

Would prefer to drill as few holes as possible when mounting it.

Thanks

Measure and get one from boat US for under $200 or you can go custom from Mills to the tune of about $650.

I got one from Boaters World. Sunbrella material for around 300. I put it together and it holds up a full power. It comes with a zip up cover. Moving around with it in the down position is a bit combersom.
I used stainless Bimini mounts that clamp on the rails and are held on by tension from a screw. I wanted to avoid drilling holes and they seem to work. They were $29 a piece.

May be a silly reminder, but be sure to get one that rests in the closed position forward in front of the railing..No wasted space this way. I have seen people with them resting aft and it looks like crap. haha

Hey Denny,
I recently bought one from Boatersworld (Catalog # BMNI0036). I did drill some holes and mounted it like the new Montauks. I put it on sliding tracks on top of the gunwale. When it is down I just slide it ahead of the bow rail and it totaly out of the way. This is a very nice Sunbrella top and it fits perfectly.
A friend of mine mounts his to the Bimini bracket located inside the hull. He just disconnects the bimini and moves it ahead of the bow rail and ties the ends to the rail. This is a picture of my friends Montauk .

Thanks for the infromation. I'll give that a try when my boat gets back from getting it's trim and tilt fixed. It goes down but not up. Nothing that money can't fix.

The West Marine biminis only have aluminum struts and I do not think their quality control is that great(see article on continuouswave.com on buying a bimini top)

For more $ and no aggravation, mills (www.millscanvas.com) makes custom fit stainless steel strut bimini tops. All they need is the year of the Whaler,no measurements etc.

The extra $ might be worth it to save any hassle, etc with other suppliers.
