Don't want to start a Merc vs Yamy thread but I'm comparing the 90 2 strokes. I get $500 off on Mercs thru work and have always bought them. I moved to an area with a shallow rocky river so I have been looking at engine weights closely. Looks like there is a 44 lb savings with the Yamy.

1. With the lower cubes is this as powerful as the merc?

2. With controls and rebate the Yamy would be about $1500 more, is the weight savings worth it?

It would be interesting to see a power head HP rating for both. I suspect that Yamy is getting the HP boost via their gear ratio.
Prop shaft HP is going to be close between them but with the Merc having allmost 22% more cubes I would think the torque curve would be better.
44 pounds isn't much, and I think that most of that weight is in Merc's stout gear case.

In a Whaler that 44lbs is not noticable. My 70 weighs 340+ and I have a jack plate and I only sit 1/2-3/4 of an inch lower than my Yamaha did. The Yammie is not as powerful, more like a 75 than a 90.
