Me and the family were out at Kensington Metropark, boating and bicycling around the park. Those who are from Mich. may know were i am talking about. Anyway after my second trip out,i stopped at the truck for lunch leaving my 13 sport at the dock. When i go to start my '98 40 hhp merc it just cranks over, like it isnt getting any gas, so i pump the bulb and still cranking, by this time i am smelling gas and figured that i flooded the carbs. So i wait,as i am waiting i tilt the motor up all the way and watching water drain out and at the end of the water draining out i see 10 or so drips of what looks like lower unit oil. I know this isnt normal.5 min later engine started and all is fine, but those drips of oil are in my head, after about 30 min. of cruising i head towrds the dock,so i dock the boat and tilt the engine up and watch the water drain, guess what no dripping oil at the end of the water draining out.So what do you think happend?? a seal that is bad??probably. A fleuk?? No. This ,98 motor has less then 10 hrs on it, but has'nt been broken in properly.
and for winterizing, who knows. any help would be great. thanks in advance,Ron

CAREFULLY, remove the bottomn oil screw and see if the oil is milky, if so water is getting in the lower unit,,if it is clean just top off the Oil, as per your owners manual

My1st,

Being that the motor would not start and you were cranking it over for a while. I would think it would quite likely have been unburnt two stroke oil. The motor is still pumping fuel and oil to the cylinders. Did you happen to notice if the oil was comming from the prop?

I would think this the most likely scenario considering you checked it later after running it and there was no sign of oil.

If you have not drained and replaced the lower end oil, now would be a good time! Might give you some peace of mind.

actually the lower unit oil has only about 3 hrs.of use,as i changed it about 3 wks. ago.
I did notice that the oil came out of the water drainage holes after all the water had drained out.The oil didnt come out of the prop.As for checking the lower unit oil, I will do that this weekend and report back with my findings.
Thanks in advance for all the help,Ron
