I started this season with a Edgewater 185CC and a 11' Tender. My hopes were to upgrade the Edgewater to a 22-27 trailerable cuddy or express and the 11' Tender to an older 13' Sport. What I have now is a 2000 Montauk with a 90 Merc and a Harpoon 6.2. I also acquired a 2000 17' Hightide with a Johnson 115. The boat was traded at salvage value because it was flipped in an inlet. The engine was pickled within an hour but has cracked pistons. The cosmetics and lower unit seem fine.

My thoughts at this time are to learn to sail and keep the Montauk. It seems like my family prefers the Montauk for buzzing around the waterway and harbor. I am thinking of moving the 90 Mercury to the Hightide and repowering the Montauk with a Yamaha F90.

I have heard some different opinions about doing something like this. One dealer I talked with said the Mercury was the perfect motor for the boat while the local Whaler dealer reccomended the F90 or the Honda 90. I wrote JB and he indicated that the Suzuki 70 four stroke would be better overall. I have also had a number of inquires about buying the Montauk without power.

So here are my questions.

Would the Yamaha F90 be a decent long term motor for a Montauk or should I stick with the Mercury 90?

Should I consider replacing the powerhead on the Johnson 115 or try and sell it as is?

What should the asking price be on a Montauk without power?

Here are the boats and motors to consider

2000 Montauk - rear seat, front cushion, bimini, cover - good to excellent condition.

2000 Mercury 90 Saltwater - good condition around 100 hours.

2000 Hightide 17'CC - Low to mid tier center console - minor cosmetic damage

1999 Johnson 115 - Cracked Pistons 53 hours use prior.

2003 Yamaha F90 - price with a extended warranty installed - $8000

I would leave the Montauk as is and have the powerhead repaired on the Hightide. It will be your mose efficient use of funds, by far.
Good Luck!

Rebuild at $2k is the way to go or search E-Bay for a powerhead. is yamaha making a 90 4S for 03? $8k is outrageous.
