How for can YOU go? Today I took my 9 foot boston whaler from Back Creek in Annapolis to Kent island, and after fueling, from there to Inner Horbor Baltimore and back which was a round trip of 56.3 miles. Crusin at about 20-30 with a 25, 2 stroke merc. I burned about 3.5 gallons of fuel. 56 miles=3.5 gallons not bad eh? Small 1-2 foot fetch cause by boat wakes in certain areas was quite miserable, beside that it was a very nice ride. I have a set back jack plate and a stainless prop...soon I will be adding manual adjust trim tabs I can't wait to see what happens. Have YOU ever dreamed of taking your whaler on an endless trip? It's my dream to cross the gulf stream on one of those rare calm days from Miami to Bimini on just a 5 gallon tank in my 9. Just kidden guys:) pe@ce

o what a beautiful day, as my cousin (Jeanne Fisher) and I took the 13' to the sencond bouy out Ponce Inlet. We bottom fished for a while, then a bouncy, but fun ride back in the inlet. Whalers somehow make one think of "Capt. Dan"...>^..^< Regards, Janis |

Speedy, Don't let the naysayers and pessimists discourage you. I think Miami to Bimini is a great idea. I crossed back from there on June 1st on just such a day (caught 49 mahi the day before).... smoothe as a baby's butt. I could have waterskied all the way. 5 gallons?? That's a bit risky..... I'd take 6 just to be sure. One of my greatest memories as a kid of 13 (21 years ago) was a buddy and I taking our matching 13' Whalers w/35hp Evinrudes over a Easter Break, from Lighthouse Point, up the ICW to Jupiter, in the St. Lucie river through all the locks to Lake Okeechobee, where we camped on the dike for 3 days before heading back. We felt like modern-day Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn..... Whalers make fantastic adventure vessels..... World2Xplor. |

I was just about to post a asimilar question, we have 14 tanks, 120 reef balls and a bunch of old culverts sunk in the gulf of mexico, north of Tampa, 21 miles out. Would I be nuts to try it in a 69 13 ft whaler? Would you? Thanks! |

I think you can take a 13 Whaler just about anywhere, but for open water passages it is unwise to go alone. Arrange your trip with another boat (or preferably a group), so if you break down you aren't all alone out there. And of course, make sure your radio and other safety gear are all in order. |

21 miles in a 13'? You could....3 guys went to So. America in 13's but I would make sure you have the necessary equipment. You are out of radio range that far out, etc. Be careful. I constantly want to take my Montauk to Bimini but I tell you what....50 miles in even 3' chop would be the trip from hell.....or trip through hell. |

I recently re-read Kon Tiki yet again, Thor Heyerdahl's account of a raft voyage from South America to the Polynesian Islands; there is a fascinating review of the concept of seaworthiness, and the benefit of being relatively small and self bailing. Consider the cork as a small balsa-like boat. This book gives me (undue?) confidence encountering rough seas in my Montauk, small enough to avoid pitch-poling. However, the self bailing aspect of the BW can't compare with the balsa raft... |

Big Shot:I have always thought about taking a open boat from PB to the Bahamas and then all the way to the Grenadines. From my look at the charts the PB to Bahamas is the longest strech of open water. However this is something I would want twins on the back for. The other trip I want to do is NYC to Buffalo up the Hudson Mohawk Erie Canal system. Sleeping bag and an Amex card. |

My Dad once went 2 miles in a 13' with so many people in it that water was up to the gunwales. |
