I need some help please Im getting ready to start hanging my 17 montauk on my davits I have some fokes say hang it from the eye up by the [anchor locker] and the rear eyes, I thought it would be better to get a strap for the front I think the rear is ok or should I use straps front and rear

thanks

Suggest you use the eye hooks front and rear for which they were designed... attach stern cable hooks on inside! Straps can damage hull and/or rub rail! Happy Hangin'... Clark... Spruce Creek Navy

Interestingly, I was checking out an antique Chris Craft website the other day, and there were some pictures of a CC being disassembled. The chief complaint was that the ribs were cracked at the chines. Apparently this is a common find when these old boats are rebuilt.

The cause seems to come from the fact that owners would use straps instead of the lifting eyes that were in place. There is definitely a "squeezing effect" that occurs in the straps that doesn't occur when using lifting eyes.

I wonder if a case could be made for a similar effect on glass boats. The same forces occur. The question then becomes, does the glass and or composite materials weaken under duress over time?

I know many owners assume the straps to be the "safer" method of lifting. Unfortunately, they don't understand the lifting strength of those braided cables, and the related strength of the hardware put in by Whaler. At my club, we have 6 Whalers of varing size from 13-18ft. and all are put back on their trailers by wire after every use.

Considering front the inner eye is bolted to the outer eye using threaded rod, the front inner eye is as solidly attached to the boat as the outer eye. Use the inner eye, that's why its there... The rear eyes go through the transom using threaded rod just like the front eye does. If the rear eyes fall off, then there was a wood rot problem in your transom. Using a strap under the rear is just asking for a hooked bottom to the hull which is why BW's come with bunk and roller trailers.
