I was just browsing the Suzuki site and noted that the DF140, at 410lbs is only 24lbs heavier than the Merc 90/115 (and, curiously, 6lbs lighter than the DF90/115)...impressive power to weight ratio for a 4s. Seems like this would be a good power swap option for the Montauk 170 if the hull wasn't too tweaky with that amount of hp.

Lighter than the 90/115 because of the amount of metal they honed out to increase the displacement.

Too much power for 170.

Red sky at night. . .

The new 170 weighs nearly the same as the classic 18'.

That difference in weight must be attributable to more than the few ounces of aluminum removed to increase the bore of the cylinders. I think Suzuki went on a conscious effort to trim weight on that engine to get the performance up a bit.

I think the boat could handle the additional HP but don't think it would be necessary. It would probably run 60 MPH at WOT.
I am very happy with my 115 HP EFI on the Montauk 170. As I stated in the comments section of Cetacea the boat does 50.3 MPH WOT.

Tabasco--I did not realize you had taken the plunge yet. I for one really appreciate that you are willing to share your experience with the 115. I will try not to pepper you (no pun intended) with too many questions at once. At this point I think it best to move my questions to the Cetacea p. 58 discussion forum.

It may be right on the new 170 but you can't buy it without a merc!

It is too much weight for the old montauk. Although I saw a montauk with one on it. It looked ridiculous on the back due to the size of the engine.

While you buy one without a Merc, you can buy one with say a 90 Merc 2s as suggested by Tabasco, and then find a way to offload it. Tabasco worked out a trade with a Merc dealer for his preferred motor, a Merc 115EFI. From what I've heard both the Yam/Merc and Suzi 4s motors are good, but I don't know enough to say if one is better than the other. Assuming 115 is the ideal hp for the 170, then the Merc has a clear weight advantage over the Suzi. Unless the Suzi is superior in other ways, it would seem that Tabasco chose the best motor.

Tabasco:

Are you voiding your warranty on the 170 by having a 115 on it???????

Fred-
Don't know.......you would have to ask Whaler. The motor is the exact same weight as the 90 HP 4 Stroke that came with the boat. The main difference between them is the torque. It really shouldn't effect the hull in anyway.Other Whalers (older outrage) in the 17-18 Ft range have a HP rating of 150 HP. The 16 Ft Dauntless has a rating of 115HP
