Reading a post by JFM in the repairs/mod area on painting with Imron reminds me of a friend who worked in the boating industry for many years. He refused to wear a mask most of the times he was using chemicals including shooting the highly toxic two part coatings. Result? He is now in a nursing home in Gainesville, FL with irreversable damage to the frontal lobes of his brain. The prognisis is very grim. He continues to go down and literally does not know his mother, father, or sisters. See a situation like this and you will put a mask on. If you are using the really bad stuff rent a respirator type. Apparantly it doesn't take much to mess you up.

Knew a fella who painted custom model trains; same thing - no respirator or exhaust fan. Died after a year of lung disease attributed to the paint and solvents.

I won't even open a can of varnish without putting on a respirator. It's like wearing a seatbelt...

My painter wore a fresh air mask. The same kind firemen use.

I stayed out side of the building and watched him. Even at 20' away I could still smell the paint through my regular spray mask.

Regards, Jay

You guys are scaring me. I painted by console and RPS with Awl-grip. Although I wore a mask that was supposed to be safe for solvents, the smell still hung around...

Good post.
