I need help. Last night I purchased a 83 18'
outrage with a 87 150hp evinrude. the motor
runs real nice but i would like to repower.
what should i do. I have a 2001 suzuki 70 hp
four stroke on my montauk.Do I take the 70
off and by another 70 and twin the outrage.
or sell the montauk with the 70 and buy
140 suzuki 4 stroke or just buy a new 2stroke
150 that should match my controls. which is the best route to take?

thanks george v.

Don't give up the Montauk, George. You would regret it forever.

A Suzi 140 can be had for just a few bux more than most of the good 2 strokes, but why get rid of the 'Rude? That boat was designed with the OMC V6 150s in mind.

Run her for a while with the Evinrude. You might decide you like it.

Red sky at night. . .

Earlier this year I was highly critical of the Suzuki, and it's odd styling. That sound you are now hearing, is me eating most of my words. I re-read the detailed brochure and I now share the enthusiasim others did when we first discussed it on this forum. If the funds are there and you will use it, go for it.

Only slightly negative comment I have about is that it appears to operates "Open-Loop" with the oxygen sensor only used for diagnostics. Small issue, but woth mentioning anyway. I owned a Suzuki motorcycle that ran open-loop and enjoyed its reliability and performance.

PS. I still think the "ram air scoop" is odd, but acceptable. The power to weight is exceptional.

Great rig as is. A pair of 70hp tree-huggers will still be underpowered for that hull and weigh more than the single 2-smoker you already own. You say the rude runs nicely. Just put a little TLC into it and run dat puppy for a while. More weight and less power will make you unhappy...unless you're a Democrat.

Thanks JB I know you had this same boat so
I will look for your advise in the future.
As much as I love my montauk I need to run
20miles offshore to catch tuna and sharks
and some times the montauk felt a bit
small for that trip. What Iam going to is
sell the montauk and hope the wife thinks the outrage is the same boat. she will never know the differance. George v

Congradulations on your new boat. I wish I had your problems...whatever you decide, enjoy!

gvisko:

I had a similar delima when I bought my Montauk. The Johnson 90 ran a little rough, and I snapped the drive shaft after owning it for one month. I was right on the fence with scrapping the Johnson and spending the $$$ for a Suzi 70 efi. Economics dictated I keep the smoker, and I'm glad I did. Sure it eats gas, runs a little smokey, etc., etc. but with a little $, elbow grease, TLC, and a lot of advice, it now looks and runs great. My best friend owns a 83 Montauk with a 'rude four stroke EFI, so I do get a little lonely at the gas dock, and a twinge when I see (and hear) that engine, but at least I can still afford to take my girlfriend out to dinner, and I always get there before he does.

Keep the Montauk and give the "new engine" piggy bank time to grow. (coincidently my friends have talked me out of selling the Montauk, and my "new engine" piggy bank has been renaned my "used OR18" piggy bank)
