If all goes well, I will be the new owner of a 1984 Outrage 18 by the end of the day. The boat is in relatively good condition but the motor, a 1984 150 Johnson, has a blown powerhead. The bad news is that I will be buying a boat with a blown powerhead…. The good news is…..well, I am sure there is some good news here….. Oh yeah, I finally found an 18 Outrage for sale in my home state of Texas. The big question is whether to spend the money to rebuild the old 150 Johnson, which with the exception of the powerhead appears to be in great shape, or to buy a newer motor. And I should stress the word newER as I cannot afford NEW power. What should I expect to pay for a good used, early to mid 1990s model 150 OMC motor? I assume in the $2500 – 3000 range but I have little to base that on. For those interested, I am paying $6500 for the rig with the blown motor. And yes, I know that is too much but I have been looking for a clean 18 Outrage for a while with little success. Hopefully I will be happy with the boat once it is re-powered and I will not cry when I have to sell my current boat, a 1983 Montauk. That Montauk has been my most favorite boat I have ever owned. Any ideas on what I will have to pay for an early to mid 1990s Johnson 150 are appreciated.

seabrook,

I have repowered my 1987 outrage recently and still have the 1987 150 evinrude.
The motor has an electrical problem, probably the stator/ volt reg or both. It has good compression and the last time it ran with all 6 cylanders firing it ran great.
I could sell you the whole thing or just the powerhead. To be honest with you the
rest of the engine needs paint work. Let me know if you are interested

Sorry I quit the post too soon.

I bought 2 1997 johnson ocean runner 150's used one on my boat and sold the other. I sold the other motor for $3,600 so I would guess from the number of inquiries I recived that it was a reasonable sale price. So a newer 60degree omc will probably go for mor than $3,000 in good condition. As for the older crossflow 90degree omc motors it might be a challenge finding a complete motor in good condition most of them will be corroded if not used in freshwater.

Seabrook,
Congratulations on the 18OR. I drove down to Kemah on Monday to check it out, I also have a Montauk and am thinking about moving up to the 18 OR. (Keep talking myself out of it) North Shore Marina has a used 1999 Evinrude 150 asking 6,000. There is also a boat repair shop in Pasadena on Shaver with 3 used Evinrude 150's, dont know their asking price. I can get the name of the shop if you want to look into them.
Enjoy it!
Chad

Thanks for the posts. Chad, please give me the name of the place in Pasadena that has the three 150s. The 1999 Evenrude sounds nice but not in my budget. Also, I am considering getting this one rebuilt, so if you know a good mechanic in the area, please let me know. Thanks again.

I have a 1985 150 Evinrude pair that I just bought on a boat and repowered, I live in Corpus Christi and am going to sell the motor for $2250 if you are interested. The motor has spent most of its life in freshwater and has 381 hours, it runs great but the silver painted is faded on the cowling. I am going to include all guages, wiring harness and prop, I will also install it if need be. You can email me @ jbradford@stx.rr.com if interested.
thanks

flieman, thanks for the reply. I would be interested in buying a motor like yours, but not too excited about the drive to Corpus. I live in Seabrook, TX, just southeast of Houston. I would like to either find a good used motor in my area or have this one rebuilt. My concern is that since I do not know any boat mechanics well in my area, I do not want to spend the money and get a sub par job. Again, I ask if any of you know of a good mechanic in the area, or have a good used 150 Johnson/Evinrude for sale in my area.
