I was walking around a local dock on my home waters of the Cheasapeake Bay and found a Whaler that I had never seen before. This looked to be about a 35 footer with the classic Whaler haul. It was so strange to me because, it appeared to be an inboard boat not I/O. It looked something like an ocean fishing boat with a big cabin, fishing tower with steering wheel and controls up top and complete with outriggers. I don't think I was the new Defiance 34' though.

I am trying to research this boat but can't find anything on your site. Maybe you guys can shoot me some info on these kind of boats whaler made and what years they made them as this boat looked like it was a few years old just looking at it. It didn't look sparkling new as if it were a new Defiance.

I am trying to find out about this model because I think a big big whaler with an inboard diesel is a great ideal and something they should build. Say a 40 footer for charter boat captains. Here on the cheasapeake most all of our charter boats have a single inboard diesel that is placed in the middel of the fishing area which is in the back. The boats are plenty wide enough so there is more than enough room on both sides of the engine. The center engine is also functional as the cover over it makes a very nice table for preparing bait and things.

Thanks-- Tim

I think you're referring to a Defiance.

http://www.whaler.com/Rec/defiance.shtm

I don't know how well it has sold, but I've never seen one. It seems to me that a relatively new large-hull boat would have some trouble competing with the used market in this class. You can get one hell of a used boat for the $300k + that the 34/35' Defiance costs new.

Since these are Whalers, they may hold value better than comprable Luhrs, Ocean, Bertram models, but only time will tell on this.

I think Tim is referring to this model:

It is not a Defiance. This boat was built during the late 80's until '91 I think.

It is pretty neat, but one complaint I have heard is that the motors are loud smoky and vibrate a lot.

NoviceWhaler: I would agree with your statement about reslae value with one exception. I am not aware of a brand (other than Whaler of course) that holds its value better than Bertam. As an example take a look at the 31. It could even be argued that this particular model has held value better than anything on the water.

One more thing. I believe that the engine options were gas Crusaders or Cummins diesels.

The 31-foot Whaler hull not only has the classic lines, but it was built with the same techniques of construction, the Unibond hull.

The newer 34-Defiance uses a different hull construction technique, the Duo-bond.

There's one of these (Similar to OutrageMan's Hyperlink above) down the canal from me. I've always suspected it was more than 27', definitely inboard powered. The one I've seen has a hard top and a tower above it. Definitely rigged for fishing, and unfortunately little used. It's been years since I saw it away from the dock.

Whaler also produced the 27' with twin diesel (and gas) inboards:

Yes, the was a 31' that I saw. Thanks guys. Maybe someone would research the swamped compacity on this model. And how about my ideas of whaler makeing a 40 footer specificially for the chesapeake bay.

I have a brochure for the Whaler 31' here.

I went to a special party at my dealer when the 31 came out in 1990. They had a dinner catered and the Whaler 31 was the centerpiece of the room. It was an awsome boat. I like it better than the new Defiance.
The one I saw had twin cummins diesels.

If you want a copy let me know and I'll fax it to you

There were two versions of the 31'. The first run (desert tan hull) had some serious weight and balance problems and required the addition of 300lbs of lead bricks molded into the transom. I was lucky enough to have started work and the Edgewater factory in Feb 1991 and worked on replacing the hulls of recalled boats. We basically gutted the entire boat and put everything that was servicable into a new hull. The second version was the 31L and had the white hull. This was a much better boat but still had it's share of problems. They were offered with both gas Crusaders and Cummins diesels, but no gas versions were every built.

I knew a guy here in the NorthWest with that 31. What a nice boat. He upgraded to that after selling his 27 Whaler to my brother. It was called "Coin Jam" and was powered with twin Cummins. He used to cruise it all the way to Sitka to fish out of. Hearing those diesels idle and watching how well the boat maneuvered was awesome. Boat reminds me alot of the current Pursuit 3000 Express. My uncle has one and it is a great boat. If you are looking for something closer to 40 go with the new 38 Express. Cool thing about the 31 is that there are not too many around.
