I found a 74 17' Whaler that has had an aluminum center console installed. I suspect it was originally the side-console model. What was this called?

According to the reference section. A side mounted console of that year would be a Currituck. A Newport also has side console but I dont believe they made them in 74. Check pictures in reference section and you will be able to match your boat.

It could also be a Minot or Katama, which had large fiberglass side consoles. My Katama is a 74 model year. There are a couple of them in the Cetacea section.

If the console is aluminum than it is probably a commercial hull. Does the hull have a red dot after the Boston Whaler Logo...if so this would signify that it is commercial workboat type hull....with the extra glass in the hull for added strength.

Has there ever been a book published which shows all the Whaler models ever manufactured?

I suspect you are seeing a Commerical hull my LES (Law Enforcement Special) has an Aluminum console it's not quite a stand up console, also has a black, sport type wheel with foam grip, and yes it has the "red birthmarks" I will email a pic if you want.

By 1974 there were only two models with side steering, the Currituck with a wood console and the Katama with a fiberglass console. The Minot model had been dropped by then, the Newport yet to be introduced

I do not think Whaler was equipping commercial hulls with aluminum consoles in 1974 so it is probably a retrofitted aftermarket console.

If you have the serial number, Whaler can tell you exactly what configuration the hull left the factory as.

Looks like an after-market job to me. But only $2500.

Yes, that's a Currituck model with a retrofitted center console.
