I have come across a 1987 15 Super Sport for sale that looks like it's in very good condition (pictures only, will see it maybe this weekend). It has a 70hp 1985 Yamaha, a '98 galvanized trailer, a 2002 JB Mills bimini and all the wood looks nice and shiny--very clean boat. The owner is asking $7,000. Any opinions on the price? Thanks

Sounds a little steep to me, Poker, but if it is truly in top condition it is not out of line for a starting price.

Red sky at night. . .

Is it unusual for the motor to be 2 years older than the boat itself? I honestly don't know, but that stands out to me. Sounds like a lot of dough for a boat that size with a 17 year old motor.

Price sounds a bit steep. In February of this year I purchased an almost flawless low hour 87 SS Limited with an 88 Johnson (original boat and motor package) with a year old aluminum (I live in Florida) trailer for $6,000. Included, bimini, two batteries, 12 gal. tank, fish/dept finder, and all safety and ground tackle. As I said in another post I almost gagged counting out 6K but as it turned out this was a very fair price for a boat in this condition. The fifteens don't seem to come around to often, however, the wait is worth it for a nice one. 5,500-6,500 seems to be the range around here. I found mine through the Boat Trader at Traderonline.com. Good luck.

I can't believe how stingy everyone is with someone else's money!

The new trailer and new Mills Bimini are worth at least $1,500.

The Super Sport option is very nice; that makes the boat more valuable. It probably has nice railings, too.

The odd thing in this deal is the 1985 motor. You'll have to take a close look at that.

There is also quite a history of correspondents who have found "the deal of a lifetime" on a Classic Whaler being sold far below its true market value. You can always wait for one of these to come along, or you can buy a Whaler and pay the market price.

Jimmy's got a purdy li'l 15', too, so mebbe he could be a bit close on this one.

But he's dead right. The canvas and shippin' charge cost dat feller about $1,000 a few months ago, so fer the rest he's askin' $6,000. Go look at boattraderonline fer a couple months and see, dat's in the middle of the askin'prices fer 15's. Make sure the motor's got good compression, then offer him $6 grand as is and settle fer $6,500. If the motor's ka-poot, either walk away be willin' ta pay about $5,000 fer the hull if he'll take it.

Or jez let the next guy wants a purdy li'l 15' figger it out. Dat's free advice an' woith ever penny:-!

Would suggest you call Chuck Bennett (Whaler Customer service)and give him the # on the transom well, I suspect this boat was left over and they put an up to date engine on it. 7K is not too bad for a really nice 15, If you want one for 4500, let me know, and it is not as nice as you describe.

I am also curious about the motor being two years older than the boat. Maybe the motor was NOS (new old stock)? There is something else that's got me worried: in one of the pictures, you can see one of those cheap, ugly folding plastic fishing seats installed behind the rear bench right in front of the motor. The photo is taken from the front, so I can't tell how this contraption was mounted. What should I watch out for when looking at the mounting hardware/method? I would definitely get rid of it. Also the railing is not as nice as Jim thinks. It looks like it came with the small side rails and then a bow rail was added later; one of the very tall ones, which I don't like and would remove too.

Prob'ly will jez need to squeeze some 5200 into any holes drilled into the deck to mount the seat. Clean up the non-skid with some acetone before the stuff sets and she'll look and be fine. Don't be too quick 'bout chuckin' that bow rail if it looks to be original. Try'er out fer a while. That tall rail's kept me from tumblin' ova'board a number o' times, an dat' 15' can be a li'l tippy, especially up front. Whaler rigged the 15' wid'dat bow rail for a number of years, so it's likely original to the rig.

If it has 2 rails then not a supersport. Supersports have a rail that starts at the rear seat and wraps all the way around. It is only about 15" tall at the bow. $7k is steep with an 85 engine. If it was a 95 engine....ok. The trailer is a 98 so it is not new Jim....a lot can happen in 5 years. Mine is a 96 and I already replaced the springs and hubs.....now it needs tires(dry rot). Problem is that motor goes poof and you are looking at $5k for a new one. I would cry if I had $12k+ into a 1987 15' boat. Might as well go buy a new one for $15k.

On the other hand, if it had been mine, it would have been stored inside, the trailer would have a few hundred miles on it, and the '85 Yamaha might be all the way up to 200 hours maybe. You can't plan on that, but those boats exist.

The Super Sport is nice. I wish mine was a SS. If it was me, I'd put a deposit pending having the motor checked out by the local Yamaha dealer. If the seller goes for that, what's the downside?

Just paid $6,500 for an 89 15 sport GLS with a 95 70 HP Evinrude...no canvas...'91 EZ loader trailer all in excellent condition....so the price seems a tad high to me, but a good starting point....

I bought a clean 1986 17 super sport last May with a 90 evinrude and galvinized cox trailer from the original owner for $4500, he was asing $5000. The wood is in good shape, the motor runs well (but for how long?) and the tralier needs to be re done for long hauls. When I had it checked out by a local marina, he thought it was a reasonable price for the super sport model.

Poker13, you don't say where you are, and that might change the appraisals. I think $7k is not a bad place start the discussion.

I paid $2300 for a '81 striper. You don't suppose someone took advantage of me? :)

Now the more I look at the pictures the owner sent me, and the more I read the reference information and look at the pictures on this excellent web site, and read all of your replies, the more suspicious I get about this boat. I think the mahogany console has been modified to make it look like a super sport, but it's really a sport. Everything looks different.

1. The rear thwart seat doesn't have the storage behind the the back support, it has it under the seat.

2. There is no front thwart seat going across the whole interior, just a little one person seat in front of the console.

3. There is no one-piece wrap-around rail from the seat to the bow.

Does all this amount to a fake?

Here is my 15 SuperSport that I will be selling as soon as I find a bigger Whaler as a replacement:

Value is a very subjective number. My 89 has never been in saltwater and has been used at the max 5 x per year. It is in Boston Area so our time on the water is limited by the seasons. Does this mean that you can compare it to one that has been bottom painted and has been used often? The 15 is a great boat. Mine was made in the Rockland Mass Factory. Can you compare it to a new Searay oh I mean Whaler? The Mercury Engine was made in 1989 and has been perfect with no problems. Are the new Mercs as good? looks to mee like alot of problems on the new models. Haw many 15s you see for sale? Not many.

Fine li'l 15' and cool gallery link in yer profile. Only question is, do all those pictures date from 1987? Dat rig looks brand new!

wspellenbe, your boat is beautiful, got me salivating here, man! Unfortunately, I'm in Texas, so it would be a very long trip for me even if you were to sell it at an incredibly low price.

thankyou,I just took the picture about 3 weeks ago. I had additions to my family 2 1/2 years ago. It was great for me and my wife but now with the twins could use a little more room. It is a great boat. Owned since 1992 and I was looking a 13 ft but the guy who was selling talked me into it. As I was saying can you just give a price based on a year of manufacture or are there other things to consider? Price is very subjective.

One more thing about the 15. It is a rocket with a 70 hp engine.
