I'm looking at what appears to be a solid boat. Hull is 7-8 of 10. 93 Merc, 90hp...seems ok. All rails. Home-made console.Old but rebuilt trailer. He's asking $5500. Any advice out there?

When a vintage boat is missing a crucial component like the original console, that is quite a loss in value. Restoring the console to original condition will be very expensive and time consuming. You do not cite the age of the motor, an important factor in appraising the value of the boat. You do not mention any valuable accessories, like canvas covers or a flying top. These will also be expensive to have made and installed. |

The motor is a 1993 Mercury 90hp. No canvas... no other extras. Primarily a good hull, good rails and with an apparently good motor. |

On closer inspection this morning: The console is a little better than I thought - rebuilt original form, but modified (wrap around plexiglass added); and the hull is a little worse - a lot of little cracks on top and a painted-over, heavily scratched bottom. I'm fading a little on this one, since the hull lost a couple of points. |

How is the floor and transom on it? Stress cracks around the transom, splash well? Hull solid? Have you walking around inside it? When buying a boat like this, I really feel that most of the money spent is going into the boat, itself. Who would buy a 1968 anything else for 5,500? $5,500 is not a bad price, but at the same time it is not a steal. At one time I was looking at a boat like yours and asked the same question as you did about the price. Ended up not buying the boat. I think that a purchase like this should raise no doubts in your mind and give the biggest warm and fuzzy feeling that you have ever gotten. (thinking about the day that I bought my Montauk still gives me a smile) Archie |

Archie, The boat is rock solid...like a whaler. It just has enough badly rough finishes that it would take a lot of time and money to bring it all back. Top to bottom refinishing can be expensive and I am having doubts that I can make it make sense financially. It is easy to see though, that finished out,it could be a great one.Rick |

Maybe a point of comparison would help you decide. I got a '68 Currituck with a '95 90 hp Evinrude VRO, side rails, no bow rails, no canvas, nice Mahogany, excellent old trailer (new greasable bearings and tires - perfect electrical), came with 2 Danforths, a spare brand new prop, 4 pfd's, coast guard kit, perfect electrical, orignal lights - everything. It was perfectly waxed when I got it - garage kept off-season. Minor dings and and even more minor stress cracks - I've seen boats with plenty worst on the water, going about their business... I paid $7500 about 3 months ago for "turn-key, trouble-free" boating. I bought it from an electrical engineer who had the service manuals and the cans of varnish and stain he used every year. The only thing I've done is re-wire the bilge pump (corroded). Some will say I paid too much money - I think I got the beast deal :)

I just purchased a 1969 16'7" with a 1989 70HP Yamaha and a trailer for $2,800. It does not have any cracking anywhere just a few dings, blue interior is very good. Just another point of view! |

i bought a 69 with an older, but in good shape galvanized trailer, 1997 johnson 88hp spl engine, no rails, original center console wo the windshield. the bottom and interior had an exceelent refinish on them. i paid $6600 for it. i don't feel i stole the rig, an unfortunately, for me, i didn't discover this site until after the purchase.it seems, however, from reading the many comments in this forum, that i made a good buy . happy boating, steve |
