Thanks for the great advice - so we won't do the T-top, but my husband wants to add sleeves to the Bimini to lift it up. He has ordered a 31"console and 29" leaning post. What do you think of lifting the Bimini top this way? He's 6'4". (Wish we had found this Board in 1987 before we purchased this boat! Now we are trying to fix it up enough so we can at least use it again ~ if we had won the lottery last week, we would have bought a bigger boat!)

If he's damned the torpedoes set on this, then have at it. Some folks on this forum cut Whalers into li'l pieces JEST to see what's inside, so loadin' one up with a bunch of furniture is MILD by comparison! Just be forwarned that a 15' hull is tiny to begin with. Me and my 6'6" son can speak from experience. Before you can't cancel that mail order, why not draw out the boat deck on graph paper, one foot to the square, get the footprint of the console and leaner he's wantin' to buy into the picture, and see what kind of room you'll have left. You may need a second boat just so's to fit the two of you on board with all of that furniture. My advice: Put that money toward a 16'/17' hull and be much happier.

What do you mean by "add sleeves to the Bimini to lift it up?"

A substantial part of the attraction of the Classic Whaler boat is the purposeful nature of the design. When you look at a Whaler you see a boat designed for a certain function and utility.

When you start talking about adding really radical elements into the boats, like a center console and leaning post on a 15-foot hull, and adding a bimini top with a frame so tall that a 6-foot 4-inch fellow can stand under it, you really being to alter the character of the boat.

Recommendations to get a larger boat are really good suggestions in this case. You should keep the 15-foot boat in reasonably stock condition. It will be much easier to sell a nice 15-foot boat if it is not all tricked up with non-Whaler add-on's.

When boats have been modified, if the changes are done well and in keeping with the original style of the boat, they don't affect the value too much and might enhance it. You ought to look at Clark Robert's 15-foot boat to which he added a new console and seating. This can give you some ideas of how a 15-foot boat can be made more comfortable.
