I have the opportunity to buy a 2002 Suzuki DF70 with controls, stainless steel prop and water separator (everything installed) for $6700. Or I can buy a new 2000 model DF70 with the same setup (from the same dealer) for $6200. Would you spend $500 more dollars to get an engine that was two years newer, even though neither engine has never been used? Do gaskets and rubber parts dry rot from non-usage?

I wish that I were able to find a deal like Bigshot got (i.e., the same engine--1999 model--brand new, for less than $3000). That's a no brainer. But is two years of sitting on a shelf worth a $500 discount?

yes.
I got a nos outboard from 1990 and It runs like a top.
The only thing was the first run the water pump was not pumping to good and it was starting to run hot but over time it cleared itself out. I paid half of what a new one would cost

good luck

If I could pay half what a new one would cost, I would buy it immediately. No question. What I'm wondering is, if I have the choice of getting a 2002 for $6700 or a 2000 for $6200, does it make sense to save $500 or is there $500 of value in getting an engine that is two years "newer."

I wonder if the technology or design is any different?

Buy the newest one. Too little difference in price not to. More marketable if you sell too!

Raygun has a good point. Are the engines 100% identical?

I am told that the two endines are identical. The 1999 was a bit different than the 2000, but there is no difference between 2000 and 2002. I don't know anything about 2003 as they are not out yet.

Ditto masbama; prior year's models will be worth less down the road, all other things being equal (hours, condition, etc.). $500 just does not seem like enough of a discount.

I know that this is going on your 15, but I am not sure...will you be hanging this motor on a jackplate with some setback? If so, which one? I will be very interested to hear how you repowering project turns out. It sounds very tempting. Best of luck.

Buy the newer motor! Now, if the dealer will take $1500 less for the two year old...???

I'll buy the newer one. Thanks, for the input, everyone.

I will be hanging the motor on a CMC manual jackplate with 4" of setback. Clark Roberts has convinced me of the merits of the jackplate. Plus, with the extra weight in the stern, I want to get the motorhead as high as possible so reduce the chances of it getting wet.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

BTW, when I spoke to the Suzuki dealer he was less concerned about the weight than he was about the top-end speed. He thought that it would go too fast! He said that the displacement of this engine was 1300 cubic centimeters, compared to 1100 cc for a Yamaha 90. I told him that I was not planning to run it WOT and he laughed at me.

Probably like a lot of others, I'm looking really forward to hearing how this turns out. I think it will be quite good, and it will be very interesting to see how it compares to a typical 2-stroke 70.

looking forward to how it turns out? Russel, JB and I have talked about our setups and even posted threads on the subject.....for about a year now.

David....I think you are overpaying. Guy in MS has them for $4950(01's). My bud paid $6700 for an 02 115 Zuki. From NC, make the drive and save a grand or two....plus no sales tax.

I know you've posted on your engines, which sound excellent. What I'm interested in is how it does on the 15, rather than the 17's that you and JB have.

more to the point.....Jeff Stachowiak(on this forum) just bought a brand new 01 evinrude in TN and had it shipped to Jacksonville.....$5117 total cost. You want to spend another G....up to you. The reason I get deals is I shop and listen to leads people on this board give me...thanks JB for the lead on my 70.

Oh...sorry Russel, when he referenced it to a 90, I assumed a 17, but now remember he has a 15.
