I would appreciate as much input as possible about the 1991 Montauk classic with 1991 Mercury on 1991 trailer. Boat is a 9 on 10 scale. Exactly what year did whalerboard begin use, just sold 1983 with screw's always stripping out. Also what kind of luck with 1991 Mercury? Owner wants 17 Outrage and will sell for 10,500 when he can find next boat. What kind of price for this condition is that on a National level. Need as much input as possible on this cherry.

PSW,
Look down at the post onthe anniversary model thread to get an idea of price.
I think it's a fair price but not a steal.
Remember it's the end of the season, bad economy etc... but if it's that nice well it may be gone.
The Merc 90 2 stroke is bullet proof, just ask lhg:)
Regards, Jay

PSW,

Any other options that come with the boat? Might help justifying a little higher value.

I shopped the NW market for a used Montauk a bit over a year ago and think that $10,500 for the brief description of the boat is a decent deal.
I saw a few boats that needed to be repowered sell for over $9,000. If the engine checks out and the hull is in the described condition it may be your boat.

I've also been looking at Montauks in the Seattle area. I bought mine last summer, and helped out a friend get one this summer. I was looking at a lower price point than where this boat is; I tend to eliminate anythging over $10k, so my experience with post 1990 boats is limited.

For the Merc engine, I think 1991 was pretty much the same engines that they had in 1988 (my year). There's both a 100HP 4 cyl and a 90hp 3 cyl. Both engines are well thought of by many forum members. I have the 100HP and mine runs perfectly. The 90HP may be a slightly better choice with less weight and size.

Canvas is a nice option in the northwest, look for it. If the boat has canvas, and is truely a 9, I'd say go for it. If a 7 or an 8 (they are always a 9 on the phone) then offer down some and see what happens. I'll bet you can get that boat for less this time of year.

Last December I picked up a 89 with a 100 Merc and trailer. It was from the Oregon coast. I payed 8000 for it and put about 750 in the motor.
If the boat your looking at is a (9) it is probably worth it. Have the motor checked out. Good luck

The boat looked great but there were a few things that I was not expecting. First off the fiberglass bow hatch was not appealing, I like the wood up there. Also there was a mohagony shelf on the console that looked good, but it was not factory I don't think. The only other flaw on the whole boat is that the engine is a 115 and when idling it shuts down to 2 cylinders. I am going to drive it and see how that feels. The owner is a good aquaintance and he knows that 10,500 is a good deal on a cherry so he wants to keep it until a replacement is found. Not much I can do about that except keep looking.

So does anyone have that 115 and have experience with inline 4 going to 2.

You could always have a teak hatch made if you really wanted one.

115 is over power for the boat, but not overweight Again, assuming 1991 Mercs are the same as 1988 mercs more or less, my 100hp four weights the same as the 115, they are built on the same block.

My 100 has the same feature you mention, it shuts down two carbs while at low speeds, it just does the oil injection. I've not noticed any problems, it seems to work just fine. My engine smokes at idle, but don't most 2 strokes? Its supposed to save fuel, my boat already idles too fast to troll, so I've not taken advantage of this.
