Anyone here own a 17' Newport? This may sound silly but, I saw one on the river for the first time last weekend. It was gorgeous! Anyway, if you own one or you don't, what do you think of it?

Newport was the flagship 17' hull. It still amazes me that most people desire a Montauk over it. I would gladly trade my montauk hull for a newport....just love that hull.

I have a 1986 Newport. This is its second season. I love it. When I bought it from an old guy, the original owner, he mentioned it had canvas with it. I never looked at the canvas until getting it home...what a beautiful setup: full standup bimini, plastic window facing forward that connects with a full dodger....I run this boat into December in the NE. Anybody interested, I have it scanned and will email you a picture. I will probably need to re-power in the next season or so, its got a 1986 70 hp Johnson that runs great...but I suspect is growing tired. I use the boat for: wakeboarding (kids), fishing, lobstering, dingy service to my cruiser....I Love it!

I really can't give testament to that as I've never had the opportunity to pilot one. One thing is for sure, I love my montauk and the way it handles. Maybe people prefer the montauk over the newport is that there are so many more of them (the montauk) out there? Like I said, I have been around water my whole life and this is the first time I've seen a newport. (hmmmm.. maybe I just wasn't looking...) ;)

NedsPoint--

I too would love to see pics of your Newport.
I have an 86 Montauk, same power as yours and love it but have always been partial to the Newport concept.
We are in East Falmouth, Eel River and Waquoit Bay... Great place to cruise your Newport from Mattapoisett on a nice day!

My 1979 Newport 17 is the same hull as the Montauk. The differences are; deck all around like Outrage (storage), lower railing, spray windshield up front, side console (large), rear casting deck with pedestal seat or ski pole. Mine has 26 gal gas tank under console. I love it. It has to handle just like a Montauk maybe a little heavier cause of the deck.

Up here in Gloucester w/ 88 newport converted to center console. I will be repowering this winter. love the set up w/ storage areas on the sides. I have a RPS from whaler. I was told from the guy in Cohassett that it was dealer converted in 1988 due to the strong demand for CC

PS please send pictures to: jpoleary@imation.com.

Thanks

Many dealers did the "Newtauk" conversions.....best of both worlds. Obviously the hull is the same as all 17's the decking is the cool part along with the jump seats in front of the console. I have seen them set up 3 ways. 1) is with a RPS like a Montauk. 2) A 4 man seat that is hinged and tanks, etc go under it. 3) is the rear platform that covers about the whole stern with a cushion on it. That is a rare setup, probably due to cost & weight.

We were pretty rough on my buds and the only issue we had was breaking the front jump seats.

I own a 76' BW Newport in about a 7 out of 10 shape. I absolutely love it for my family. I have two little ones that love to ride with me. It provides great seating for my wife to get some sun. I have a 78' 85 HP Johnson Javelin powering it. I cruised with my Cousin who has a 17' McKee and 1999' 115 Johnson. I actually kept up with him at WOT.

One bad side. IMHO - I don't like it as a fishing boat. A center console is much better for fishing.

But it is one great family/cruising boat. The boat usually turns alot of heads as well.

Harles-

It's funny you should say that. I've noticed that most older whalers turn a lot of heads. ie- the reaon this thread was created. Saw my first "classic"(is that proper?) ;) newport and I was in awe.

I purchased a 1989 Newport around Christmas last year, what a Christman gift for myself! Needed a lot of work but finally have gotten a handle on it. I really didn't like the huge console, instead, I opted to replace it with a montauk console. Now I can say I really love this boat. I have a few minor things to do on it but it handles like a champ. My wife even complimented me on the progress! I really like the idea of storage, can't be beat. Now if I only had a little time to use it, I'd really be happy.

If anyone needs the splash shield, let me know...it's not in great shape, a lot of crazing(for lack of a better word)...but no open cracks...I'd just like to get it out of my shed...

Would love to have that option on my 88 Newtauk. I have the cc. Love the boat and ahve been looking for the shield. I can see where it was mounted on the bow. the holes were filled in. Do you have the hard ware to mount it as I do not. I am in Gloucester Ma.

will e mail you

I'll have to check about the hardware...I thought I saved the mounting brackets in the basement but then my wife cleaned! Let me see this weekend if I still have them...

Have a good one.

I have an '88 Newport w/ Center Console and RPS. I just bought it at the begining of the Summer in So. CA. It has been great with a '89 90HP Yamaha. Hours unkn but compression was almost perfect w/ good service records. The extra storage under the gunwales is a big plus on the Newport w/ rod holders built in, fuel tank under the RPS, forward locker, bimini (pretty sure its not Mills). I wasn't sure if I liked the two windshield concept but after being out in the Pacific O. I have come to appreciate...

I am new to this forum but read hundreds of posts prior to buying...thanks for everyone's help.

Nedspoint -

How is the front dodger/shelter connected to the bow of the boat? i.e. does it snap to the top of the ss frame running along the bow, so someone under the canvas can see out of the plastic?

I've always thought that rig would be perfect for a small overnight/weekend gunkholing trailer righ, with the additional storage that the decking gives. Just need onle of those factory or custom built platforms with custom cushions. Make the cushions with the whaler pleat on one side, and canvas on the underside. Flip them for sleeping (sleeping on plastic has always annoyed me).

Does anyone know the original color of canvas used on the older 70's Newports? Ours is a 1975 and needs to be replaced.

Hi Slap,

I have a 78 Newport and the forward shelter and top are a light tan color. I believe it orginal factory equipment but I am not positive. If I have a chance I will check this weekend and see if I can find a label. As for the boat itself to answer the orginal question it is the same hull as the Montauk and other 17 foot hulls prior to the new 17' outrage of the mid 90's. The model is as Bigshot stated the, "Queen" of the fleet at the time of the model in the 17 foot range and is certainly a nice combiantion of storage and functional use.

Thanks for checking on the canvas and also has anyone had a need to replace the two front seats in front of the console?
Sam Collins posted 09-25-2002 07:31 PM ET (US)     Profile for Sam Collins  Send Email to Sam Collins
Slap, As for the seats - Yes, I have been in need for quite sometime of replacements. At one time I contacted the outfit in Fla. Dave's I think - And just could not bring myself to pay the 450.00 each which they were asking. What about yourself?
Slap posted 09-25-2002 07:43 PM ET (US)     Profile for Slap  Send Email to Slap
I contacted the other supplier this forum refers to (can't think of the company right now) and she said they don't make them because of the cost and time involved. Seems they have to mold the back contour. I then contacted Tena at Davesup and since they are willing to do the job they got it.

The material they use to mold the seats is water and rot proof so figure they will last much longer than the originals.

Makes the $450 I sold my newport console (complete) for look like a great deal...for the person who bought it!

We busted like 3 sets of those on my buds newport when we were kids. Guess they were covered under warranty or we would have heard about that.
