Hi folks,
I am in the process of upgrading from my near perfect 1987 13'Sport to a 1993 Outrage, and am finding very little information available on the 17. There seems to be plenty of info and used examples of the 18' Outrage, but no info and very few used examples of the 17'. I may be suprised, but I don't think I am going to get a lot of the original documentation or manuals when I take title to my new prize in a week or so, even though it is a one owner boat. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to share their impressions of the Outrage 17 (the 89-95 version), plusses and minuses versus the Montauk 17, any sources of manuals or other good reference materials for ongoing use over the next 10-15 years I expect to keep this gem? I am particularly interested in any knowlegable views of why this hull was only in production for 6 years, when it seems to be such a really good balance between trailerable size (without an SUV) and decent offshore capability with its 13" draft, deep v, etc. I really focussed on the Outrage as a trailerable alternative to a Montauk when I found that it only weighs about 50 pounds more dry, and most of the 100-115 HP motors used on them are essentially the same weight as the 90's common on the Montauk. Also, any inputs on the differences in original cost between the Outrage and Montauk 17's of the same year?

Thanks in advance, Mike

Hey Mike:

I just purchased a 1991 Outrage 17. Sold my 1979 Montauk.

Couple things first: The spec's I have show the draft as 10" not 13" and that hull was made for model years 1991 - 1995. Boat weighs in around 1020 so you are right it doesn't weigh much more than the beloved Montauk.

I too was/am curious why it was only in production for such a short period of time. Seemed like a nice in between boat. Montauk vs 18+ Outrages.

The 17 Outrage looks and feels a lot bigger than the Montauk. With a little deeper V it seems to perform better in the ocean seas and handles the chop well. I also like the storage on this model and the built in gas tank.

For me it was the biggest whaler I could fit in my garage. It is easy to tow, launch and retrieve by myself if I'm fishing by myself or with the kids (7 year olds). Handles the shallow water the same as the montauk so far.

I have a 92 and 95 catalog which I think will show your boat. The hull was identical throughout those years...

Hi Mark, thanks for the input. Like you, thius was the biggest BW I could accomodate - in my case, the biggest I want to tow behind a Volvo wagon, adn I won't buy an SUV just to get a bigger boat. I got the 13" draft number from this site, in the reference section specs chart. It certainly looks deeper than the Montaukm, but it is the results that count, and you have confirmed my expectation that it feels like a bigger boat and handles chop better than Montauk. I am really hoping to get a smooth enough ride in the open for my wife to get comfortable - with the 13, my son told her recently that its just more fun without her, because we all like to run the open water faster than she is happy with ;-). Of course, she hasn't been happy lots of times in our 35' sloop when we head out in small craft warnings, but she's a great sport about it and I think this Outage is going to be a big plus all around.

Don't suppose I could talk you into parting with one of your catalogs for a price? If so, let em know.

Thanks, Mike

WORLD of difference 'tween the Montauk and the O/R 17'. Not a Dougherty hull but much da same spirit. MUCH better ride characteristics and more design features than the Montauk. Momma should LOVE it by comparison. Reason Ah tink it didn't sell fer long is dat the O/R 18/19' is another big step up in performance (more beam, cockpit and even better ride)for not much more $$, especially on the used market, and da 18' fits in ever garage Ah've known it to come home to. Doubt yer Volvo would have any more trouble pullin' a 18'. In any event, da 17' O/R is a fine rig, in mah never-humble opinion.

Mike, Good to see you on line. "Continuouswave" is like Wednesday medical rounds, a few close answers mixed with 'right-on-target' solutions. Now about my 17SSL...
