Someone in a Classic Montauk got a little carried away with the fish yesterday, and got rolled over about 50 yards off a jetty in Garibaldi, OR. The bar there is notorious for being rough, and has been the site of many fatal accidents over the years. The occupants were fortunately rescued a few minutes later by passerbys. Fortunately for the Whaler, there is a Coast Guard station about 1/2 mile away, and a 47' lifeboat ( http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/images/MLB-47.jpg ) came to its rescue. As soon as I got on the water to crab, I saw the lifeboat pull the Montauk up-right and tow it to shore. I talked with one of the Coasties afterwards, and he said, "I wasn't really worried about the boat sinking because it was a Whaler."

Knowing that the people are fine, here comes the part that hurts. Because there was too much surf, and the boat is only property, they did not want to send a swimmer to attach a tow line to the boat. So, they threw out a big grappling hook which punctured one of the gunwales. Like a big fish, this is how it was towed.
