May buy 2000 23 Outrage w/225 Merc Optimax. Interested to hear from anyone that has experience fishing either of these.

Keith- I have a 2000 23’ Outrage although with twin 135 Optimax. I see quite a few with the 225. I prefer twin motors when off the coast. What type of fishing are you looking to do? |

Keith, There has been alot written about the 23 Outrage in the post classic section. I have a 23 Outrage and have been very satisfied with its performance.. My favorite fishing spot is 23 miles out in the gulf of mexico. The 23 rides extremly dry in the rough. Good luck, Ed Stone |

Thanks for the info. I plan on using this boat to fish the middle (Cell) of the Ches. Bay and also run ofshore to some wrecks (15-20 mi.)I've heard that twins are the ticket for offshore. The weather can change quick and I was curious about how the boat performs when it gets really rough. |

I've got a 99 w/ twin Yam 150 EFIs -- have spent alotta time in it offshore NC, anywhere from 15-50 miles, and in the Pamlico Sound. The OR 23 does fine "in the rough stuff." However, IMO, if you want a pure fishing set-up, there are other designs that are better. If you want more versatility (fishing and family stuff, etc), the OR is a solid offering. Personally, I wouldn't go a long way offshore (alone...) w/ a single Optimax on the back. I've owned (and liked) two Mercury products, but I'm not convinced that all the QC and engineering issues with the Optimax have been sorted out such that I would bet my future on it. Additionally, I had an OR 21 w/ a single Yam 225 on the back and never got comfortable w/ a single on the back -- even one with a reputation for reliability. Just as there is peace of mind in "unsinkable," there is similar confidence in "twin Yams on the back." Certainly no free lunch but... My final questions would revolve around your experience and your expectations. I urge you to test drive the boats you are considering and get as much of an apples to apples comparison as possible, that way you're less likely to be disappointed later with the choice (whatever it might be). The OR 23 fits MY needs perfectly. If you're patient and methodical in your search, you'll make a choice that fits yours the same way. |
